Seems to be connected with some of the stuff discussed here back in the 50s (pages that is):

I don't understand why they can't just build a new arena in the parking area nearby. Then tear down the old Smith Center and put new parking there. That way they can still play in the current one while the new one is being built. Yeah, parking on game days will suck more, but that would still be temporary and better than having an arena off campus, or them having to play in Greensboro while they renovate the current arena.

I also think if you base it on this season alone that Hubert will be back unless they get blown out in the first round of the ACC tourney and/or the NCAA tourney.

I've been day drinking since 7am but thart Rusty Carter interview was a bunch of jibber jabber.

There is no reason to move the Dean Dome at all in my humble opinion. My concern for years has been finding a way to get more students closer to the court. I have proposed a potential solution on IC for years and here on ZZLP so I won't bore you with repetition, but I might tomorrow;)

it’s frustrating that the only real options seem to be renovate the Smith Center or new arena at Carolina North. One of the biggest considerations (in my opinion at least) should be better seating for students. All of the outspoken proponents for a renovation—including the former trustee in this interview—love to wax on about tradition, etc. but never want to address student seating.

I think a new arena is the best way to fix that issue, but I don’t love CN’s location, and I have serious doubts that Roberts and co. can successfully pull something like that off without it turning out to be a soulless strip mall vibe.

Rock and a hard place.

I think the Bowles lot just isn’t big enough with the B School right next to it. The other proposed site is Odum Village, but the counter to that option that I keep seeing is that it’s just too close to the hospital and would hamper future development for those facilities.

Well, loyalty was giving the program to Gut and it turned out badly. So maybe loyalty was a weakness, not a strength. Or maybe the "loyalty" has been exaggerated. Did he oppose forcing Gut out? It seemed like he was reaching out to Roy while Gut was still coaching, in anticipation of needing a replacement. Is that loyal?

The point is that people can value "loyalty" in the abstract, without relying on "loyalty" to make complex decisions that do not easily boil down to moral narratives.

You don't think Dean would be loyal to the basketball program? That he might worry that HD is trashing what took so long to build? I mean, I don't know. That's the point, nobody knows. You can't just draw conclusions about what someone might think about a specific event based on vaguely defined values that don't fit cleanly onto the situation.

Your greatest strength can sometimes be a weakness when overused (my corporate HR people would be proud).

I agree...Coach Smith's loyalty in handing the program over to Guthridge cost the program in the long run (despite the short run production). Coach Smith knew that Guthridge would be HC for only a short time which is why he reached out to Roy as well as to others.

I think if you ask former players and coaches they would tell you that Coach Smith would be defending HD with these results.
Is that the right move? Who knows. Sure, that's up for debate, it's not like the man didn't make mistakes.

I think UNC is in a good position to have more four-year contributors. With our ability to pay top NIL, we should not be outbid by other schools for players we want to keep. So, it just requires finding someone who gets enough playing time to stay happy, but is not so good that he can go to the NBA.

Assuming there is a player/coach personality match, the top 30-50 range recruits would seem to have a good chance of sticking around for four years -- as they will likely make more money at UNC than G league or overseas.

Yeah, Roy was doing that before all this. Not always intentionally.

One of Coach Smith's core values was loyalty. And he loved Hubert.

He did criticize Doherty during his tenure, but only because Doherty had some steps along the way that went against the Carolina Way. The first major misstep for Doherty was letting go of the longtime secretaries.
Didn’t Coach Smith fire a warning shot about Matt BEFORE Doherty was offered the job? The suggestion to hire Rick Majerus? Was that a suggestion that Matt wasn’t ready and wouldn’t be?

Maybe it was after?

Firing the administrative staff was STUPID on Matt’s part (my Dad was a Dept. Chair at UNC for about 16 of 20 years. He credits the admin staff with his success).

Doherty was correct to bring his Notre Dame assistants with him.

But, jettisoning the office staff? Stupid MF. And, Matt wasn’t stupid. Arrogant? Yes.

This is part of my desire to keep Hubert in case of a close decision. Keeping this tradition under him seems more likely than restoring it later. It might be wishful thinking on my part but I think and hope that the game becomes more reconnected to the school not so much the tail wagging the dog.
