i've said it before, but even if High deserved a second chance (i'm ambivalent on this point tbh), it certainly should not have been at the expense of the young woman involved by keeping him on campus - HD should have facilitated a transfer for High and done what he could to clear his name for the program that was getting him. That the second chance instead looks like keeping him on the campus, after the woman's story expressly talked about the trauma it caused for her to see him and his image being celebrated around campus, is a stain on his character, and there's no way around that IMO. Combine that with the fact that he appears to have kicked the women's team out of the Late Night tradition before it was replaced with the NIL Blue-White scrimmage and I'm not really left with a great sense about Hubert's character via how he thinks about women -- and it's most of the reason why I'm not moved by arguments that claim that those who think he needs to be replaced aren't worried about character or likeability.

I think we are reaching a stage where evaluating talent is more important than in game coaching ability. If your entire team is going to turn over every year, you are going to win or lose based on the ability to construct a new team ever year.
Acquiring talent has always been more important than direct coaching ability, all things being equal. It's always been the Jimmys and Joes over the Xs and Os.

What you really want is someone who can help you acquire great talent and then coach 'em up, as well.

While Purdue has been really good the last few years, I'd don't think of Purdue as a really successful program/coach.
They’re about to get their 6th straight top 4 seed. Two 1 seeds, a title game appearance, and two sweet sixteens in that time. It’s not on par with UNC’s historical peaks but much better than what we’ve been doing in the same time period. And all with impressive roster continuity and likely not massive NIL spending.

Hubert will be back next year unless he chooses otherwise.

But sucks to be in the outside looking up at the top tier, just waiting around to see if we get a six seed somewhere. Better than nail-biting on the bubble of course or missing the tourney entirely, of course.

I know we beat UVa earlier this season but discouraging to watch them cruise to the ACC Final with a new coach against a Miami team with an amazing one year turnaround with a new coach.

Lots of bad luck with injuries this year, but even when Caleb got hurt we weren’t cruising for a top two seed in the conference or top 4 in the NCAA tournament.

Sigh. I have the basketball sads.

With Caleb this team could have beaten anyone. It would have been an exciting last month.

Sorry if this was already talked about but you guys are really able to spin some yarn on this subject.

As either IC or 247 commented on this subject? Recently? Any rumors from donor? That kind of stuff. Insiders opinions?
Yeah I wonder too.

It marked the 11th time this season UNC has trailed by double digits — and, more concerningly, the eighth time against an ACC opponent — while the defeat also snapped Carolina’s streak of winning at least one ACC Tournament game each year since 2014.

Yeah, they've been really good the last few years.

I'm not trying to take anything away from them, but only one of those years has Purdue really been elite across the regular season and postseason, the rest have been very good to very very good with at least one issue.

Painter's also been at Purdue for 21 seasons...if I'm judging him as a coach this feels like the peak of a very good career rather than the delayed start of something really great or better.

He’s safe. I said wait till the end of the season but the Caleb injury essentially is the end of the season. Even 0-3 would be fine given the circumstances.

But in some ways this season was the worst for everybody. It would have been better if he were terrible or elite. This was a show some signs of promise but ultimately incomplete type of year.

So, unfortunately, next year will start as a repeat of this year amongst the fanbase.
Well, it wasn't great with Caleb..HE and Big V were entertaining although they did show some fight down the stretch.

I just think after last year, this needed to be a homerun...middling is the direction. What if we have a little bit worse season next year but gets a good win or two... that's how you get a decade of mediocrity and then you start to just become that.

Yeah I wonder too.
I don't have 247 anymore, so I can't speak to them.

I've seen nothing solid anywhere i've looked. The generally accepted wisdom seems to be that HD has done enough to return, but I don't see anyone putting fingers to keyboard with anything even semi-official.

A coach his age with his time under Roy as an assistant, his record as a head coach, his recognition from his time on TV and relationships there and relative youth? My guess is , if he wanted to coach, he'd have a larger range of decent choices that we would. Disagree with me if you want but why would you try to paint him as undesirable by anybody else's standards. I don't think anybody would say he was a top ten coach right now but he's not a lot below that, imo.
Virginia Tech maybe

The perception of a program past its prime is part of what he inherited. Don't act like that didn't matter in the eyes of recruits.
it's supposed to be his job to bring it back!

He came in old school he connected with some players but he put us behind the curb in NIL and he's not a savvy experienced veteran with a big name or a new school coach.

Given the support put into the program (14+ million roster, highest GM in the country, analytics team, etc.) and the climate around it being a make or break year for HD/staff, I don't see how anyone can argue, legitimately, that this was a successful season prior to CWilson getting injured.

This sums up my sentiments. Even when healthy we were still a cut or two below the top teams in the sport. Looking up at the cream of the crop and never really a true threat nationally or within the conference. Wilson then getting two separate injuries to end his season is one of the most deflating ways that a season has been torpedoed that I can remember. Feel awful for him and the team.

Now we’re going into another offseason with the fan base divided, massive holes to fill on the roster, and a very murky future. Bitter pill to swallow while seeing all these other teams play at a high level in their conference tournaments and feeling hopefully about their NCAAT prospects.
