Posted it on the game thread but posting it here too (from Adam Lucas):

The Tar Heels made some bad history with the loss. It's the first time in school history the program has lost in back to back seasons in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It's the first time the Tar Heels have ended a season 0-3 with losses in the regular season finale, the first game in the ACC Tournament, and the first game in the NCAA Tournament. And it's just the third time ever Carolina has lost to a double-digit seed in the NCAA Tournament. Losing three of the last four NCAA Tournament games is the worst NCAA Tournament stretch since a span from 1977-80 that also included a loss in the national title game.

That is a symptom of Hubert’s decision not to retain Steve Robinson when he took over so he could have a complete staff of UNC alums.
Coach Rob staying was never a realistic option. I think we all know I'm not an HD supporter, but we can't blame him for things that were never within his control.

Surely even those who have been pro Hubert have to admit that he just had one of the worst coaching performances of his career at just about the worst possible time.
It was indeed. But even worse than that was his speech on selection Sunday… Talking about “two games” in Greenville. Totally unheard of in the coaching fraternity. I was beside myself when he said that.
“Two games”! Damn coach! Everybody knows you talk t like that!
It’s one and done Coach. ONE AND ONLY ONE! And now look at you, you’re done.

I’m trying to wait and let the dust settle for a day or two before declaring that UNC will actually fire him, but the way that played out was legitimately the worst possible outcome for Hubert. It’s unreal.

Had we won, I think he would have been fine no matter what happened against Illinois. If we had gone on to lose that second game a bunch of fans would still be pissed at the idea of keeping him, but ultimately the PTB probably err on the side of caution and give him another year. Had we lost a not particularly close game tonight where the team was clearly disengaged from the beginning, it would still be bad but you could maybe at least rationalize it as the team not being able to get off the mat after losing CW to injury in such a jarring way. Close loss in a back and forth game, same idea.

Stretching out a massive lead where it’s clear that you have a significantly more talented team than the opponent, and then completely blowing it with poor game management with the players looking lost in their execution was the one outcome that would make a loss completely indefensible. In a fucked up way it’s almost impressive to thread the needle like that.

Hubert’s not a great coach. That’s certain.

If the decision is made to move on, Lee Roberts, the BOG, the BOT, and the NASCAR AD worry me about the hiring process.
This is precisely what worries me too. But at this point I'm not sure that keeping Davis is an option - this is a devastating loss and one that I'm not sure he's going to recover from. But I definitely agree 100% that the thought of Lee Roberts and the BOG and BOT finding the best available coach is very worrisome. These are, after all, basically the same folks who brought us Belichick. Just a very rough time for UNC sports.

If quality of press conference answers was a material factor in the evaluation of HD's job he would have been gone a long time ago, lol

That is a symptom of Hubert’s decision not to retain Steve Robinson when he took over so he could have a complete staff of UNC alums. 18 years at UNC and damn near 30 sitting next to Roy wasn’t “in the family” enough for Hubert. Or maybe he didn’t want a more experienced assistant with head coaching experience looking over his shoulder. I don’t know.

Robinson was the guy who coached the Tar Heel guards all those years. Ask Raymond Felton or Ty Lawson or Kendall Marshall if Steve Robinson helped them be better guards.
From what the PTB at IC have hinted at, Robinson wasn't going to work for Hubert.

It's largely on the players but it's also not the players' fault that HD forced 4 guys to play the entire second half and exhausted them
Veesaar’s last FT attempt was short. Tired legs short (not the attempt at hitting the rim, which I truly think he was aiming for and missed.)

It wasn’t a presser. You must not have seen it. It was a speech to the team… no press was there save for a cameraman. No, it was a speech to the players right after they all learned they got a 6 seed in Greenville.
Hubert broke the unwritten rule of coaching in front of the entire team. Unforgivable in my coaching opinion. And I coached for over 25 years.
