I'm hopeful (and, based on who he seems to be as a person, expectant) that once the time arises, HD will do the right thing for the program and help make this as smooth of a transition as he can. I believe he will step down with grace and dignity (via a negotiated buyout) and will say all the right things about coming together for the future of the program.

That has nothing to do with anything about "loyalty to the Lee Roberts athletic department" and everything to do with ensuring that the program that Dean built and Roy carried forward has the best chance of continuing to succeed in the coming years and decades.
I think he will move aside with grace and dignity as well.

With stakeholders involved, I’m not sure that the “the program” “continuing to succeed” looks the same to everyone.

Whatever he does I’d bet that his love and loyalty will be to more than athletics but rather to his Alma Mater. No matter which of the several sides you land on, that’ll be something gone for the foreseeable future, i.e., allegiance and affection to UNC.

Maybe they move Hubert to an ambassador role or something along those lines.

That's not a great idea, at least not initially.

If we're going to make a break from having a coach from the Carolina Family, then we need to actually do it. No one will benefit from having HD hang around the program in some auxiliary role...not HD, not the new coach, not the Carolina Family, not the program.

The reality of the situation is that moving on from having a coach from the Carolina Family is going to be a grieving process for a lot of folks and you can't really go through that process unless you actually move on.

I think Hubert will want to distance himself from the program for a while. The new coach might not be that fond of him being around. The booth gets him physically away and a reason to maintain some distance from the basketball program. Both could probably use it. If it's to be done, make it clean and don't look back.
