Greg: Latest on UNC's Head Coach Decision - Meetings
The latest intel we're hearing on the status of Hubert Davis and the future of the UNC Basketball head coaching position.www.on3.com
Yes, it appears to be. Sorry about that.Is that a paid article?
Not really talking about him being involved in the basketball program. Unceremoniously dumping the guy is a tough look. That's not a great idea, at least not initially.
If we're going to make a break from having a coach from the Carolina Family, then we need to actually do it. No one will benefit from having HD hang around the program in some auxiliary role...not HD, not the new coach, not the Carolina Family, not the program.
The reality of the situation is that moving on from having a coach from the Carolina Family is going to be a grieving process for a lot of folks and you can't really go through that process unless you actually move on.
Basically confirming what Norlander wrote and Thamel said earlier - HD will (most likely) not be back next season. What does it say?
He could do both.Naw man, he’ll be back in the broadcast booth. Easy money. Sweet gig.
If I was him, put in the spot he's in, (No, I don't care about any of the "Who shot Johns") I'd want some time and space from the program. He could do both.
Yeah, I get that. But he loves UNC. A ceremonial position could come off as demeaning. If I was him, put in the spot he's in, (No, I don't care about any of the "Who shot Johns") I'd want so time and space from the program.
Maybe we could put together an all-Cherry staff.
It doesn't matter what role you're talking about, unless it's a role with no public-facing duties (which is directly opposite of most ambassador roles). Not really talking about him being involved in the basketball program. Unceremoniously dumping the guy is a tough look.
He is a Tar Heel.IThe only way I can see this being messy or unceremonious is if Hubert decides to really dig his heels in.
Resign and still get paid the buyout or do it Mack Brown’s way.I’d be stunned if UNC isn’t working with Hubert on the semantics of the announcement to make a sad moment as painless as possible. Resignation, amicable mutual parting of ways, etc.
The only way I can see this being messy or unceremonious is if Hubert decides to really dig his heels in. Otherwise, once the dust settles he will still be viewed fondly by the vast majority of fans.
I'm not saying he should or should not do anything. It doesn't matter what role you're talking about, unless it's a role with no public-facing duties (which is directly opposite of most ambassador roles).
If HD is making public appearances on behalf of the University, it keeps him and the "removal" in the public eye. That almost certainly benefits almost no one.
Let him have some time and space to lick his wounds and process what has happened. Let him grieve the loss of his position and the hopes he had of continuing the Carolina Basketball tradition. Let him heal from all of it.
And then in a couple of years you can start the process of publicly re-integrating him into the Carolina Basketball family (provided he's interested). Do something to honor him and his time as coach. Welcome him back with open arms and let folks show him we still care. Have the new coach & admin include him.
Not giving him some kind of role right away isn't "unceremoniously dumping" him, it's giving everyone time to breathe and recover a bit before having to do much publicly. And it should be seen as a gift to everyone involved.
We can treat him with dignity without giving him some honorary or ceremonial role.I'm not saying he should or should not do anything.
I'd just like to see the man treated with some dignity.
From Greg: "Given that Davis played for Dean Smith and was handpicked by Roy Williams to be his successor, there’s an intentional aim to find an amicable conclusion and a consensus view to treat Davis with deserved respect, according to sources. To that end, a resignation, not a firing, is the expected exit plan."I'm not saying he should or should not do anything.
I'd just like to see the man treated with some dignity.
If you do it correctly. Do you have faith in this administration to do that?We can treat him with dignity without giving him some honorary or ceremonial role.
Sometimes just treating someone like an adult who can handle a little adversity without silly trinkets or coddling is the most honorable thing you can do.
