IC going to On3

And I’m going to be honest, because I am a little high. I know you got a fair amount of shit as a mod, but I also know that none of us really knew what was going on behind the scenes, but on IC as we know it’s last day, I am going to say this - in a lot of ways, you were the mod that held everything together. IC wouldn’t have been what it was, at its best without you.

And I know that you threaded a very small needle, sometimes in ways that I wouldn’t have, but I suspect in ways that kept certain boards operating for longer than they otherwise would have. And, at times, it was a good place, despite its flaws.

But good places don’t last in this era of digital relationships.

We have got to be better.
Again, i appreciate the thoughts. Without going into far more detail, my main job as ZZL mod was to keep to the problems at the me level, knowing that if things spiraled out of hand the forum would be seen as a diseased limb. I pulled all-nighters helping people who fucking hated me. I had anxiety attacks, I received threats and lots and lots of unhappy messages over the years. I was adamant about not splitting politics off, and knew anti-trolling rules would be used against us. I managed to stave off the former (split didn't happen till I was gone), but the latter (as I predicted ) did me in. The people who demanded we have anti-trolling rules wanted them selectively enforced for their side and when I said they needed to be applied fairly, they built a movement to get me to step down. And so it goes...

I think Snoop and Chris did an excellent job stepping into that hostile situation and trying to be fair, even though the support above them was getting burnt out and was happy to tear it down. I believe those two desertve a huge round of applause, as well as the other mods before them.

The monetary aspect of the premium forums were always going to be a problem though, especially when paying customers frequently thought they could use their credit card as a get out of jail free card. Not to say that was the universal case, but it for sure guided the diplomatic steps that had to be danced out. And as you saw as the political board was shutting down, there was a large group of people looking to undermine the ZZL in general. Some of them were very vocal above the mods heads. The place I always struggled to keep the noise from getting to.

Sorry if I am vaguely blurting there, but I think people can connect most of the dots.

I've participated in several message boards for decades, and in various ways the single most amazing thread I have ever seen anywhere was the ZZL one about the disappearance of flight MH370. It (thread) began within minutes of the first announcement and lasted for I think 5-6 years. It kept getting bumped as there was continually no good explanation, and it featured hundreds of posters all engaged in speculations and news on what remains one of the great mysteries in modern human history.

I wish that thread could be preserved--just for how amazing it was in so many contributions from so many for so long--but I can't find it now.

Maybe it's not as interesting to others as it is to me though...

might run ou tof time. my last ditch effort was going through the post history of reggaeheel, the most prolific game thread poster. he has 47,000+ posts. the board only lets me load 25 at a time. if the thread exists, he posted on it, but doubt I will have time to get there. I'm on august 2021 now
