Yep. Was in SA summer of '23, and everything that seemed to be making money and doing well was white-owned/operated - hotels, stores, restaurants, safari/tourism businesses, vineyards, etc. You'd have to be a bit of a shit-for-brains to not lead a pretty lovely life as a white South African.

That said, there are certainly ominous rhetorical undertones that I'm sure spook some people, especially with the Zimbabwe experiment right next door.

I knew a lot of guys in Guatemala back in the days of anti-communist military rule and civil war that had "fled" Zimbabwe for the safety of a racist Right-Wing government. Many of them were growing tobacco in the underdeveloped Pacific coast part of the country. No idea what became of them.

The only other person that I have known from Zimbabwe is this guy. Some of y'all might remember him.

A friend of mine who was class of '92 married a dude from Zimbabwe. I think his family had a nice family farm, but were not 'rich' by any stretch of the imagination. Anyway, they were basically forced off their land and lost everything in the late 90s and had to relocate back to the US. I think they are doing OK, but it was traumatic at the time. We bounced up to Victoria Falls on our trip and man, that country is a wreck. The falls might be one of the more dependable money makers in the land, and the area was still a disaster outside a few hotels/restaurants. Made Mozambique look like a peaceful, prosperous utopia, which is pretty damn difficult.

South Africa fucked Zimbabwe over hard, back when it was Rhodesia. Lots of quasi military operations aimed at the ANC. Then Mugabe fucked them over again.

If they meet the rules to either immigrate or gain asylum, I don't have a problem. However, it doesn't take any faith at all to believe that a person who is uncomfortable in a terrorist country where he and his are disliked might be a better fit in a democracy than the dregs of a group most highly privileged in a society. Yet, you acted amazed there would even be a question because they were white. You're too dumb to even fake it.
