A gentleman is supposed to be positioned behind a lady when ascending stairs. I don't think that would've helped in this situation, but had you fallen backwards, he would've been there to take the brunt of the fall, or at least blunt it. The opposite positioning is called for when descending stairs, for the same reason. Of course those days of gallantry are (ahem) gone with the wind. I still, however, cite the protocol when ascending stairs with certain ladies, although my intentions are anything but gallant...

He got tired of me telling him I don’t need him to open doors for me and walk behind be on the stairs like I’m an invalid — he is still more likely to open doors as a matter of habit since he does it for all ladies he encounters and I’ve made a habit of accepting it with more grace. But the walking behind on stairs was less natural to him in the first place, so easily broken. But I do make an exception in such matters when I am unusually dressed up and/or especially if/when I am wearing tricky heels, which is rare.
