My wife would tell you, I hate being told what to do, hate having terms dictated to me. My kneejerk reaction is invade and open the strait at all cost. But then I remember I have 2 boys and I don’t want them dying half way around the world and I don’t want the Iranian people dying either.

Here's my informed-by-theory take. I don't know what the Trumpers and hardliners are thinking. Anyway:

1. the US cannot actually give Iran control over the Strait. It is an international waterway. If Iran claimed control, it would be very hard to keep it. And does Iran even want that control? Seems like there could be a lot of downsides. I suspect they would much much rather get some reparations money.

2. But Iran's leverage is the strait. So they can't exclude it now, because then the obvious demand would be to open it for cease-fire purposes. Which Iran has sort of agreed to already, but only sort of and that's entirely predictable.

3. So I predict that the strait will be Iran's final concession. It will be the focal point of the mythical best and final offer.

4. Question: does Trump or his people understand this? Probably not.
