Without a meaningful threat from Iran it seems likely Saudi Arabia and proxies in Pakistan will need a new foreign enemy. I can't see how they maintain the current economic/political system without it. I have limited confidence in the administration's ability to redirect toward China.

I don't know and neither do you.
But, you are proposing a course of action that REQUIRES American boots on the ground.

So, how many?

Going with Eric Shinseki’s estimate of 300-400 thousand in Iraq in 2003, I’ll estimate 1.2-1.5 million in Iran.

You’re the one touting a regime-toppling and nation-building solution.

So, just how many Americans?

And, for how long?

I don't know and neither do you. However, unlike you, I won't Walter Mitty myself into a five star general and act like I know. As I said, less than you might think if the IRGC is weakened before boots on the ground ever happens and an Iranian revolution gets some momentum without being toppled immediately.

We tried that shit in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sure, let’s try again in Iran.

Quoting you: “if the IRGC is weakened before boots on the ground….”

How many Americans support this air and missile war? How many will support a ground war with infantry?

Soviets in Afghanistan, British Empire in Palestine, Arabia, and Pakistan for decades - you can seemingly rinse and repeat these arguments at least back to the decline of the Ottoman Empire after the Crimean War if not back to Parthia vs Rome.

Perhaps this time it will be different.

Afghanistan in particular is a completely uneducated third-world country with no resources and no capability of governing itself whatsoever. Five people from this board could show up on camels wearing robes and wizard hats with AK-47s tied around their neck and take over large portions of Afghanistan. Yes that was a shitshow but it's irrelevant to the subject of Iran, which is highly educated and has vast natural resources. Iraq is better than Afghanistan, but still has a feeble government. We never should have done that either, but at the same time when was the last time you heard of Iraq being any kind of a threat to the U.S.?

JFC, dude…this has to be a troll attempt.

Just not part of the groupthink that keeps this place alive......

Zoo, you in particular revealed yourself to be a complete idiot on the subject when you said Iran and the U.S. were never allies in your lifetime. Rivals any comment any MAGAT ever made on this board in its complete ignorance and unawareness.

Bless your hearts.

The US never counted on the Shah’s Iran as an ally and the Shah’s Iran was never an ally that would go to war for the US.

You have yet to answer the question.

How many troops will it take to topple the Iranian regime and to build a new republic?

You won’t answer this.

Iraq in 2003 had 27% the population of today’s Iran.

General Shinseki estimated it would take 300-400K soldiers to occupy Iraq. Forget nation-build. Occupy.

How many troops will it take to occupy Iran? How many to nation-build?

1.5 million? 2 million? 3 million?

The Rand Corporation did a study of the most successful nation-building efforts ever. The common thread is that the victorious nation BEAT THE HOLY SHIT out of the losing nation. Completely subjugated it.

Are you willing to put enough American troops on the ground and have them just annihilate the Iranians? To completely subjugate them?

Then, invest $100’s of billions to rebuild Iran?

Iran and the U.S. were allies prior to 1979, period. Not even up for question. Trying to argue semantics about how far they would actually go for the U.S. is a deflection. Basically trying to backtrack without full on admitting you were wrong.

Look, I realize I'm up against a message board General here with tremendous confidence things will play out exactly as he predicts, namely that continuing this war in any respect will be an abject failure. I do not wish to venture a guess at the precise number of troops it would take to accomplish whatver end you have imagined that I implied. I will leave that to experts such as yourself. I realize that you think that anyone who thinks differently thatn you is an idiot. But I think as long as we're balls deep in the hand anyway we shouldn't fold on the river without at least trying to facilitate a revolution, particularly given that we have made things even worse at this point. Call it a difference of opinion. I realize different opinions here are often severely frowned upon, and often incite extreme overcompensation for various insecurities. I wasn't trying to trigger you, I promise.
