I hear ya. You're right, no question. I just mean that in this very specific instance, I'm not sure what folks expected Israel to do besides exactly what they are telling us they are going to do. That's all I meant. Was probably a poorly articulated and stupid thought on my part that didn't really add to the discussion.
In the hyper specific instance, Iran just yesterday made a failairly de-escalatory gesture when Khamenei implied that Iran would not directly retaliate for Nasrallah’s killing and would instead let it's proxy Hezbollah respond.

Admittedly that's a fine distinction, but there's subtle call and response diplomatic language being spoken here. And that was diplo-speak for "we're willing to let cooler heads prevail".

To which, less than 24 hours later, Netanyahu replied "Oh, we're going in on the ground in Lebanon" which is diplo-speak for "damn the torpedoes!".

Not really sticking up for the Iranian regime since they're a bunch of terrorist fuckwads, but Bibi seems hell bent on putting out the fire with gasoline.

I’m not going to respond to BattBoy’s dumb point because I know his position on this is unmovable. Curious to hear from you what makes you think this conflict is about religion?

The Houthis, Hezbollah, and Iran have all said that their attacks on Israel are directly because of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
you threw out the "colonialism" trope but ignore history. carry on.

Got it. Thanks a ton for this response- very insightful. I appreciate you.

Israel has bombed Lebanon, Syria, and Iran in the past few years. Do those countries have a right to defend themselves from a foreign adversary?
Lebanon, Syria, and Iran have also bombed Israel in the past few years. I find it interesting that you always seem to be quick to justify the actions of whatever entity (or terrorist group) is attacking Israel.

This is about settler colonialism, not religion.
I'm sensing from you an assumption that culture is epiphenomenal. You see every topic through the lens of class struggle or at least economic factors. I mean, fair enough. There's a long, long intellectual tradition. But it's also an assumption on your part that is just sometimes hard to square with reality.

In this case, we have a conflict between a Jewish state, one that is becoming increasingly theocratic, and a literally theocratic Iran. Iran's proxies are also Islamists. The Israeli government has become increasingly right-wing because orthodox jews are becoming a larger and more powerful force in politics than secular Jews. Those Jews believe in the idea of Greater Israel, which is a major force driving the conflict. It is, after all, why Israel wants Gaza and the West Bank in the first place.

It's kind of mind-boggling to read someone saying that this conflict isn't about religion. It might not be ALL about religion, and maybe it's not even majority about religion, but I mean, seriously? Not about religion?

Without a doubt, but religious freaks will always deflect the atrocities associated with all these stupid power and mind controlling organized religions.
In 2024, wanting mass quantities of people to die because they don’t believe a certain way to only tied to one extreme of one religion.

Which religion is that? Buddhism in Burma and Sri Lanka? Orthodox Christianity in Russia? Hindu fundamentalists in India? Evangelical Protestants in America?

I get so tired of this bullshit. Obviously terrorism in Islam is a huge problem, but the idea that it's only Islam and/or Islam's fault is preposterous and ignorant.

I have no intention of getting involved in the merits of this dispute, other than to hope for the least possible loss of life, but I am exceptionally grateful for the opportunity to test our anti-ABM systems, which seem to be coming along very well.
True that. Amazing really. They've had iron dome for a while which shoots down rockets from surrounding countries. Basically artillery. But shooting down ballistic missiles is a whole different kettle of fish.

Good grief, gt. Did you double post this response when you saw your identical post ended up being the last post on the previous page?
