Wow. U.A.E. is leaving OPEC so they can ramp up exports because of the price of oil? Now how are they going to export that extra oil? The pipeline to the oil Port outside the Gulf can only handle so much. Most likely they are being pragmatic and cutting a deal with Iran.

This just shows that enough money going to Iran will open the Strait up.

Speaking only for myself— I’ve long thought (ie, over the last decade or so) that our current and continuing/advancing state of decline on multiple fronts has made us increasingly susceptible to military attacks from Russia and China.

While I admit that my initial thoughts ran to physical boots/boats combat, I’ve become convinced that that level of intervention likely wouldn’t be necessary in the near term—however, it might become an eventuality as a mode of finalizing the job.
Military attacks? Yes. Attacks involving munitions on Earth? Very doubtful, to put it mildly.

I think it's more this:

lol Iran is learning from Trump fast, and will beat him at his (ghostwritten) game.

I think it's more this:

China has been jumping on the Green/Clean Energy market given that Trump the Fool abandoned it.

Iran's war is not just with Trump and Israel. They would like to bring the Gulf states under heal or at least give Saudi Arabia a black eye. So the whole thing could get resolved. The Gulf States including Iran would simply form a Board of Peace or Board of Reconstruction for the Gulf. The real purpose would be to funnel money to Iran on a monthly basis so the Strait could open up. No tolls, but I am sure that Iran would insist that every ship entering the Gulf pull a permit so they would know who they are and what they are doing. Any suspect ship they could still stop. No American or Israeli ships allowed.

Trump would have to lift his blockade but what would he do at that point? Keep yelling about nuclear? Not a chance.

All outcomes depend on the threshold for pain Iran has. So we got a game of chicken going on.

Can anyone with expertise explain why an oil field would be permanently damaged if they are shut down rapidly? The oil would still be in the ground, right? Why couldn't you just drill another hole even if the current pump is damaged beyond repair? I'm obviously way out of my depth here, it just seems odd that the oil would be permanently inaccessible.

It's been a very long time since I studied this and I'm sure plenty of improvements have been made, but there could be a few different issues. Oil extraction is based on pressure. Pressure causes the oil to work against gravity and other forces to push up out of the well.

In many oil fields, this pressure is achieved by injecting water or gas into the underground reservoir. When you start pushing more matter into the same space, the oil doesn't have anywhere to go so it likes to flow out of that little bore hole that you dug where you can collect it. It's a lot more complicated than that because you don't want things mixing with the oil, especially water, but briefly, shut down the well and you shut down the pressure and when that happens sometimes things can mix together like water or sometimes the rock. This can make it much more expensive to extract the oil later.

Sometimes when the oil stops flowing, the pipe can get clogged up with with dirt or even some kinds of waxy buildup. So you need to dig new holes to extract the oil.

All that adds costs. So what permanently damaged really means is some oil may still be there but it might not be economically viable to restart after shutting a well down.
