Vance is getting in some weird/insulting social media spats about religious doctrine … the VP doesn’t have much to do, so not complaining he is wasting time or anything. But sort of unusual for the VP to use his account to question a person’s IQ for making an argument the VP disagrees with.

Actually no. This misses the entire point of Jesus's Parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10: 25-37).
After Jesus tells a lawyer that you should "love your neighbor as yourself," the lawyer asks him, "And who is my neighbor?" In response, Jesus tells the story of a Jewish man who has been beaten by robbers and is lying by the side of the road. The man is helped not by those closest to him (a "priest" and a "Levite," who pass him by), but rather by a Samaritan. At the time, Jews and Samaritans would have considered one another enemies.
So Jesus's fundamental message is that *everyone* is your neighbor, and that it is not about helping just your family or those closest to you. It's specifically about helping those who seem different, foreign, other. They are all our "neighbors."
In fact, Jesus was often critical of those who would put family first. When Jesus' own family came from Nazareth to Capernaum to "seize" him, he was told that his mother and brothers were waiting outside a house in which he was preaching. Jesus said, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”... Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother" (Mt 12:46-50). For Jesus, ties to the Father were more important than family ties. And responsibilities to family clearly took second place to the demands of discipleship.
But Jesus's deeper point in the Parable of the Good Samaritan can only be understood from the point of view of the beaten man: our ultimate salvation depends, as it did for that man, upon those whom we consider to be the "stranger."

Interesting. My friend knows Rory Stewart well. She rented a place from him when she first lived in London working for Amazon, before she bought her own place.
My wife is a faithful listener to his podcast, which has rather refreshing deep political conversations from opposite sides of the spectrum.
I believe he was one of the few anti-Brexit Tories.

JD Vance faces icy reception at the Vatican after Pope Francis
JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, identifies with a small intellectual movement, viewed by some critics as having reactionary or authoritarian leanings, that is often called 'postliberal.'
JD Vance has been snubbed by Pope Francis during his visit to the Vatican this weekend - amid a remarkable papal rebuke of the Trump administration's crackdown on migrants.
Vance, a Catholic convert, instead met with the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the foreign minister, Archbishop Peter Gallagher, on Saturday.
There was speculation Vance might also briefly greet Pope Francis, who has begun resuming some official duties during his recovery from pneumonia - but the pair are yet to see each other.
The Holy See issued a statement after Vance's meeting with the Vatican's number two official, reaffirming good relations but noting 'an exchange of opinions' over international conflicts, migrants and prisoners.
Vance has been spending Easter weekend in Rome with his family and attended Good Friday services in St Peter's Basilica on Friday after meeting with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni.
Francis and Vance have tangled sharply over migration and the Trump administration's plans to deport migrants en masse.
