K&W cafeteria closing

Gastonia still has Jackson's Cafeteria, so I have somewhere to go when I need cafeteria-style dining.

I feel fortunate and invite any of you to join me, if/when you're in the area.

Ryan's was my favorite of all the buffet steakhouses back in the day. Quincy's and Golden Corral seemed like they had the name recognition, but Ryan's was where it was at.

Coincidentally, I'm pretty sure all of the places I've mentioned here had an Independence Blvd. location in Charlotte. So did K&W, actually.
My family did Ryan's when I was in college and a few years after when one opened near us.

It was pretty good until near the end when they tried cutting costs and the quality went bad.

When we’re in Gastonia we go to Tony’s. Love the milkshakes.

My go to at UNC was the Carolina Cafeteria on Franklin Street back in the 70s. We referred to it as C squared. They served tasty cheap food which fit a college student's budget.

good times...

My family also frequent Tony’s when they find themselves in Gastonia.

They also go to R.O.’s for that godawful slop they call “slaw”. Last time we were there, there was @ life size cardboard cutout of Trump, so all my family has sworn the place off despite several of my nieces/nephews loving that “slaw.”

If I remember correctly (doubtful) Morrison's and K&W were sold to Piccadilly...my favorite. Is Piccadilly still operating? Not here.

You remember correctly. Piccadilly apparently has ~25 locations left and still operates one as a Morrison's in Mobile (where the MC chain started).

The CH Univ Mall and Raleigh Cameron Village locations both closed during or shortly after Covid. The company then filed a bankruptcy in 2021.

Man, I miss the one in CH. I know I ate there once or twice a month for many years. Country style steak all-the-way, fried okra and green beans. And cornbread, please. Wash it down with ice tea and finish with coconut creme or apple pie.

Without looking, private equity strikes again?

I don't think so. I think it's basically nobody (other than the elderly) wanting to pay for nursing home food when they go out to eat. I know there are a lot of people sad due to the nostalgia but most buffet style restaurants aren't going to survive.

I’m not even really sad, just nostalgic.

I go to Jackson’s maybe once a year and that’s almost always with my mom (because she chooses it).
