Kyle Singler needs help

He’s knee-deep in a mental health crisis.

He needs and deserves help. Any person does.
Yeah I know mine is an unpopular opinion, and I'm sorry if it makes me sound like a bad human. But as someone who has had to struggle my whole life to stay financially afloat, and battles severe depression daily on my own, it's just honestly how I feel. $1 million would life changing money for my family. This guy had $22 mil and is now down on his luck and having a mental breakdown? Sorry, but it's just hard for me sympathize.

how about some empathy then rather than sympathy? you understand what it is to struggle, so empathize with the man.

how would you feel about someone who thinks they're even more down on their luck than you having this attitude toward you? you'd probably be justifiably thinking "fuck you, you don't know my life or my struggle."

kindness doesn't cost us anything.

I remember at least two UNC hoops players with mental health issues and maybe a third. All three had the ability to have their jerseys in the rafters.

Ray Harrison. Clifford Rozier. The two who definitely had mental health issues.

Donald Washington. Did he have mental health issues or was it academic problems and an injury late in his SO season?

Regardless, Coach Smith and the program stuck with those guys - even after they left UNC. Coach Smith’s loyalty to Donald Washington after Washington had left UNC is what solidified John Thompson’s respect for Coach Smith.

Rich people have mental illness, too. In fact, being rich often contributes to mental health issues.

If someone is knee deep in a mental health crisis, money likely means little. They’re as likely to lose the money as to benefit from it.

Why the hell is Kyle Singler living in a house with no furniture?

Most of us, if “given” $25 million at age 20-23, we’d blow it all. We’d figure that we’d save the next big contract. But, we’re buying a big house (then getting traded to another city), buying Mom a big house, buying 3-5 nice cars, buying Mom/Dad nice cars, “dating” hot women, VACATIONING!!!……oh yeah…..taxes, agent, etc. $25 million isn’t $25,000,000.00 in my account.

I understand your position...

On the one hand it is hard to have sympathy for someone suffering in life after having millions of dollars, but despite his good fortune also is suffering what appears to be a severe mental illness.

If Kyle went broke because he was a greedy dick, then I would have zero sympathy.
But given that his existential demise is likely due to a severe mental illness, then I do have sympathy for him.

And given your circumstance, I have sympathy for you, as well. Moreover, you are not a former dookie and a UNC fan (y)

Interesting, I knew he came from Oregon but had not realized he went to the same high school my niece now attends. Funny fact, he beat Kevin Love for the State Championship while Kevin was playing for my rival high school (Lake Oswego). Though in my day, Lake O (and my high school) were known for girl's basketball, not boys. Both schools had top 10 nationally ranked girl's teams pretty much every year.

My brother had done well in his life. He’s had mental health problems. He blew through what most of us would call a huge amount of money ($300K-$500K/year income over 12-15 years). Maybe as high as $750K for 3-4 years.

My older daughter has bulimia. It’s definitely a mental health issue.

Are either to blame? Should one be given preferential treatment?

He had Lewy Body Dementia. That is not curable and he knew that. His death was more euthanasia than depression.
Oh wow really? I had never heard that. Brutal.

But I mean you get the point. Sub in any person who has a "great" life as a celebrity (we think)....Matthew Perry, Whitney Houston...drugs and mental illness are a horrible, deadly mix

Well honestly from what it looks like, if he doesn't get someone to forcibly get him help he may not be around much longer anyhow.

I don't know what drugs cause that kind of paranoia.... Thankfully
Is it drugs?

Maybe he needs drugs to alleviate his mental illness?

It's my understanding that his parents have control of his money (because of his illness) so he isn't broke.

I understand the frustration of someone who’s faced financial struggles seeing someone else squander substantial wealth, but people who care about Kyle would be thrilled if he was just a random guy who worked a low paying job at an auto body shop but was capable of being a good dad and a fun and supportive friend.

it's too bad that they seemingly can't talk him into some treatment.
Having dealt with my brother for 8+ years, that’s easier said than done.

Like my brother, Kyle Singler is an adult. Like my daughter.

“Talking” them into treatment is difficult.

Let’s take another family member - my Mom. She has Alzheimer’s and definitely has diminished mental capacity. Barring going all Nurse Ratched on my Mom, I have limited ability to suggest a course of action. I certainly can’t force an action - and, she has the brain of a toddler.

Neither are to blame...

and yes, bulimia is absolutely a significant mental health issue. In my experience the challenge in treating those struggling with bulimia, is whether the driver is socio- culture based ( ie. fear of weight gain, body image, self esteem ) , genetics driven, or a combo of both.

Not knowing the specifics of your brother's mental health problems, I'm guessing those issues played a big part in him blowing through his money.
