It's possible to notice certain trends and patterns and not be outraged.
 
Was Burnett even commenting on the photo? She said she was reporting what the police knew. It sure doesn't seem as though she was looking at the photo because she also described him as having a moustache when in fact he has what we often call a goatee, or a Van Dyke or whatever it's called but there is more hair on his chin than above his mouth. Hence, moustache was also wrong, but nobody is screaming about that.

As other have said, total non-story but it's not even being reported accurately.

CNN’s Erin Burnett is being skewered for reporting that the gunman who opened fire in a Midtown skyscraper — killing an NYPD cop and three others — was “possibly white” after viewing the initial security footage released immediately after Shane Tamura’s deadly rampage

fox's lies/ propaganda are very calculated. sick and unfortunate and a blight on our society, yes. stupid? definitely not as a means to achieving their ends.

a news anchor misspeaking isn't a trend.

the ny post (or any other right wing media fever swamp "news" outlet) pretending like it means anything and you swallowing their lies hook, line and sinker is definitely a trend, though.

Yeah, that's just the Post reporter's take. What she said is not consistent with that characterization, unless you would describe his facial hair as a moustache.

I doubt Burnett was even looking at the photo when she was speaking. Probably reading off of the teleprompter. I think that's a non-issue. Certainly nowhere near the intentional misinformation that CNN got blasted for with the "firey but mostly peaceful protests" line.

I do think it is ridiculous when certain law enforcement agencies and/or media outlets will put out suspect descriptions without mentioning the skin tone of the person they want us to be on the lookout for. "We're looking for a 30-ish year old man, slim athletic build, between 5'8 and 6'0, with dark hair and brown eyes" can be anyone from Justin Bieber to Kanye West.

the video rolling on CNN when she made the statement was of the scene outside the building and it sounded as if she was literally reading from someone else's report. she says "unintelligible (guessing a different media or law enforcement source)....reporting that they do know what he looks like...male, possibly white, mustache, sunglasses, in that building, isolated, they believe to various locations including upper floors......."

the whole thing actually very much sounds like she was simply reading what someone else fed to her. not even remotely her own observations.

It's not a singular event. It's inline with calling George Zimmerman "white Hispanic" and other "coincidental" exclusions of pics when a suspect is black.

If it were a standalone event, it wouldn't be an issue. She was reading something from John Miller apparently. Miller is also a CNN employee and is the one who viewed the security footage.

White Hispanic is a more common term now. Today appears regularly on federal government, and probably state government, forms. In 2012 it was not common.
