People that are deciding that they don’t want to have kids are not doing it bc they are listening to “leftist leaders”. Do you really not know any young liberals?
 
Yes, I'm sure that the real problem is "leftist leaders" scaring young people out of having kids, and not, you know, the ridiculous costs of childcare, healthcare, education, buying a home or renting an apartment, stagnant wages, and so on. No, the real problem is liberals scaring them out of having kids. And conservatives really believe that shit, because it's a lot easier than actually trying to deal with the real problems I mentioned.

The issue isn’t that conservatives are having kids and liberals are not. It is that everyone is having fewer kids.
If you google, you can find article after article discussing why. You don’t have to guess. (Hint: Charlie Kirk is just making shit up again).

From an April 2025 NBC News article:

"Last month, U.S. homeowners’ median monthly payments hit an all-time high of $2,800, according to Redfin. Roughly 70% of American households can’t afford a $400,000 home, the National Association of Homebuilders found earlier this year. Yet the median sale price of houses sold in the fourth quarter last year was $420,000, census data shows."

So at least 70% of Americans can't afford a $400,000 home, but the average home price as of April 2025 was $420,000.

Also from the article:

"The median age of first-time homebuyers hit 38 last year, up from 35 in 2023 and almost a decade older than in the 1980s, when the typical homebuyer was just 29, the National Association of Realtors reported last year.

Buying a first home later in life can have long-term financial impacts, said Fairweather, noting that 38-year-old buyers will still be paying off a 30-year mortgage well into retirement. “It could mean that people are less wealthy as retirees,” she said, because home equity is a significant source of retirement savings for many households."

But yeah, the problem is that us liberals are scaring young couples out of homebuying, not that they can't actually afford to buy one in many cases.

This could, accidentally, be an interesting question.

I wonder if there are any studies on what is considered providing the “basics” of childhood as viewed by folks across the political spectrum. And it would be interesting, as well, if such studies could also model/sample what kind of “subsidies” parents receive in child-rearing (both governmental & personal/social) across differing groups.
 
This is so fascinating. For decades, Republicans have been wringing their hands over the fact that black and brown Americans have higher birth rates than white Americans, which they've viewed as a demographic death spiral for conservatism. Now, Republicans like Ram are celebrating the higher birth rates among white evangelicals, who are staunchly Republican, than among white liberals, and are claiming that's a death spiral for liberalism.

At the same time, Republicans like Ram are also celebrating a MAGA policy buzzsaw that could hardly be more specifically designed to target, marginalize, and ultimately disempower black and brown Americans. If effective, which, thanks to SCOTUS, it appears it will be, this has the effect of eliminating the existential threat that conservatives have been fearing for decades.

Republicans like Ram keep telling us they're not racist, they're not white nationalists, and they're the ones who are actually on the side of black and brown Americans. Like any word uttered from Trump's mouth, the only rational assumption is that it's all a lie. An intentional, strategic, immoral, antidemocratic lie.

"White Nationalists" are not stopping white liberals from having babies. It's the irreligious left that's doing that by their climate scare tactics. Family oriented, religious Hispanics' birthrates are also much higher than white liberals - and I think that is a good thing.

I have no idea what you are referring to regarding the alleged "MAGA policy buzzsaw" that is specifically targeting, marginalizing and disempowering brown and black people unless you're just making a sweeping statement about the OBBB. If so that's a stretch to say the least.

Once again, young liberals are not having babies because of Climate scare tactics.
climate change may factor in, or the cost of daycare, or the literal cost of having the child and healthcare, or the cost of housing, or they just enjoy their lives and don’t want to.
Maybe they live in a city they enjoy and don’t want to have to leave their city or their job and move back to be around their MAGA parents (that was a significant barrier for us with my in laws) or maybe just don’t want to raise kids in an environment where vaccine skepticism is so high and their kid could get measles just bc some MAGA assholes didn’t want to vaccinate.
Their are numerous reasons not to have kids right now.

Are young liberals really not having kids? Anecdotal, I know, but I know a lot of young liberals having kids. A new cousin of mine was born last night. Both his parents are young liberals.

It seems that most decisions on whether and when to have kids just involved family planning. First get married. Then figure out when to start trying (“Should we enjoy some time during our marriage without kids to do some things we won’t be able to do together for a while after kids, or should we get right to it?”). Sometimes age factors in. If you get married at a later age, then you might feel the need to start trying sooner. If you get married at a younger age, you might want to take a few years and just enjoy being a young couple without the responsibilities that comes with having kids.

Without knowing the makeup of the survey respondents, I’d think the urban/rural divide likely impacts the results. Young urbanites have exposure to a broader, more diverse, dynamic and expensive lifestyle.

This statistic isn't as damning as it seems. At market equilibrium, one would expect that 50% of Americans couldn't afford the median price of a home. The fact that the cutoff is 70% indicates that the subset of potential homeowners likely eliminates lower income households, which has been true for generations.

In fact, I doubt that this statistic has moved much over the years. What has moved is that the middle class is spending way more of their income on housing than ever before, which is a function of the rental market as much as the homebuying market.
