I watched Llamas on NBC evening news tonight
Very disappointed in the LA coverage... highlighted the violent stuff, number of arrests Had one little blip about a 7 yr old boy that lost his dad to ICE.
just thought it sucked
With few exceptions our "news" media has been so intimidated by Trump - and is so controlled by corporate interests which favor Trump - that looking to them for any comprehensive coverage of events like this is going to be a disappointment. Most of the narratives I've been watching emphasize the violence without discussing anything that might piss off Dear Leader or his minions. Which is what makes all of these conservative complaints about our "left-wing" news media so absurd.

BTTT

I was going to start a new thread entitled “War on the Media” or some such (similar to the War on Universities thread) but decided this thread can serve as a catch all on the subject. Also, there is a thread on Paramount/CBS capitulation as well… which could/should possibly merge with this one too.

Trump has sued various media outlets for perceived inaccuracies or biases, and has used his position as president to pressure outlets he dislikes by interfering in their business operations, launching investigations, and threatening to revoke broadcast licenses or funding for public broadcasting.

Fake news, enemy of the people, Trump’s war on the press is unprecedented… this new McCarthyism is a threat to Democracy as we know it. If he’s not assaulting public braodcasting, cutting funding, he’s sueing CBS or any number of media outlets, journals, periodicals, cable networks… you name it. Labelling it all “Fake” news.

He’s successfully got longtime shows and anchors like 60 Minutes, Scott Pelley, Leslie Stahl, et.al. at odds with the higher ups at CBS and Paramount and so on.

The thing is, those higher ups and those broadcast corporation owners and those media moguls are all fucking 1%ers and beholden to mega bucks and want their tax breaks, and favours from the administration… and the last thing they want to do is get into some long drawn out court case and piss off advertisers, and alienate the maga base (who watch more TV than liberals and progressives - prove me wrong on that assumption, please).

So at the end of the day, all of those entities will gladly turn “State run” and keep their place in the pecking order of the new authoritarian order. It’s easy to see and even easier to research how the exact same thing happened in Nazi Germany, Communist China and in the former Soviet Union and in today’s Hungary and in Moscow.

The jig is up. Or is it?

Can anybody say “State-Run Media”?

She used to kiss me on the lips, but it’s all over now…

I think the main takeaway from all of this is that journalism is dead. It has been replaced by infotainment, clickbait, propaganda, and profits over reporting. That's not to say that there aren't still some good journalists out there, but the field - as a whole - is dead and will need to be rebuilt alongside so many other institutions, provided we survive our descent into fascism.

Went to Foxnews.com this morning to se their tariff coverage and was surprised that they have no front page tariff coverage but also how all-in on right wing red meat stories they are today.

JFC, Fox once tried to pretend, a little. We’re fully in the Goebbelization of the entire Republican media apparatus.

They've haven't been pretending for a long while, imo, and those news stories are pretty typical of what they place on their website these days. It was always designed (by Roger Ailes & the Murdochs) to be a GOP propaganda machine, but with the rise of Dear Leader they're nothing more than a GOP version of the old Pravda. They're the unofficial official state media of the Trump Administration. The fact that so many Fox talking heads are now serving in his administration should give any true objective "independent thinker" pause about believing anything they see or read on that network, but Republicans of course just lap it up, as it tells them exactly what they want to hear and believe, and not the factual news of the day. It's not a news network, it's a blatantly right-wing opinion and editorial network masquerading as a news network. Or at least they were masquerading, I don't think they're even trying to hide it anymore.

ETA: They did try to pretend back in the 1990s and early 2000s when they first started, with the whole "Fair and Balanced" and "We Report, You Decide" BS. They had "HANNITY and Colmes" with it being laughably lopsided in Hannity's favor, but they did try to pretend to be a real news network for a few years. But even then it was a joke.

“…You have unchecked immigration, you have unchecked indoctrination and you spit them out in to Manhattan and they vote for a communist and we're supposed to sit back and let it happen?

We have to bring back Joe McCarthy.”
