This is unbelievable...

I knew about the "poem", but was unaware about the "fletching" thing.

The top result of my search for "urban dictionary fetching" was this (obviously search engine optimized) page from Romania Urban Dictionary Fletching Explained: The Ultimate Funny Slang Guide , wherein I learned that term "Urban Dictionary Fletching" (and yes the site uses the full term including the urban dictionary part) means...

Oh, and that appears to be the only entry I could coax out of that site (no rusty trombone, for example), there appears to be only six super generic AI slop blog posts on that site, As far as I can tell, that's it.

Oh, and the "Fletching" entry was last updated Nov 23rd

Which is interesting in light of this timeline chart of the search history timeline for the term "fletching" from the OP's article.

I will leave it to you to decide if the psychic trauma is worth it to discover what the real meaning of the term "fletching" is (spoiler alert: It isn't, you've been warned), but just remember this is our fucking Secretary of Health and Human services we're talking about.

In 1958 legendary CBS News journalist Edward R. Murrow, who had famously dared to criticize Senator Joseph McCarthy on his show at the height of his power and popularity in the Second Red Scare, gave a speech to a dinner of Television & Radio Corporate CEOs and Bigwigs, and famously spoke truth to power. I've included some excerpts from his speech below, and it seems more relevant today than ever, and it could also apply to the internet and social media as well as TV and radio. Murrow has got to be spinning in his grave at what is happening now.

"This just might do nobody any good. At the end of this discourse a few people may accuse this reporter of fouling his own comfortable nest, and your organization may be accused of having given hospitality to heretical and even dangerous thoughts. But I am persuaded that the elaborate structure of networks, advertising agencies and sponsors will not be shaken or altered.

Our history will be what we make it. And if there are any historians about fifty or a hundred years from now, and there should be preserved the kinescopes for one week of all three networks, they will there find recorded in black and white, or perhaps in color, evidence of decadence, escapism and insulation from the realities of the world in which we live...But during the daily peak viewing periods, television in the main insulates us from the realities of the world in which we live...We are currently wealthy, fat, comfortable, and complacent. We have a built-in allergy to unpleasant and disturbing information.

The [corporate] sponsor of an hour's television program is not buying merely the six minutes devoted to his commercial message. He is determining, within broad limits, the sum total of the impact of the entire hour. If he always, invariably, reaches for the largest possible audience, then this process of insulation, of escape from reality, will continue to be massively financed, and its apologists will continue to make winsome speeches about giving the public what it wants, or letting the public decide.

And our mass media reflect this. But unless we get up off our fat surpluses and recognize that television in the main is being used to distract, delude, amuse and insulate us, then television and those who finance it, those who look at it and those who work at it, may see a totally different picture too late. I do not advocate that we turn television into a 27-inch wailing wall, where longhairs constantly moan about the state of our culture and our defense. But I would just like to see it reflect occasionally the hard, unyielding realities of the world in which we live.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument [television] is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost.

This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and even it can inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise, it's nothing but wires and lights in a box. There is a great and perhaps decisive battle to be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference. This weapon of television could be useful."

It's nice to know that "freedom of the press" has basically narrowed down to the POTUS and his administration getting friendly, favorable corporations to buy every news and social media outlet they can get their hands on and forcibly turn them into propaganda mouthpieces for their administration. I've said this before, but maybe, just maybe, having a system where a handful of billionaire plutocrats and right-wing corporations can just swoop in and buy up most of the nation's news and social media sites and bend them to their will isn't such a good idea.

I've read that 6 corporations now control about 90% of the news and entertainment media in the USA, a huge change from the 1980s when 50 corporations controlled that much media.

I was waiting for the ratings of her interview to be released, and expected this would be the result. The effort to steal viewers from existing and long-established right-wing networks was likely always a bad move. Republicans have been suspicious of and hating on CBS News since Dan Rather was there, and I don't see them changing that skepticism anytime soon. Most conservatives will just stick with their original loves of Fox and other existing right-wing networks, and CBS News will likely lose what viewers they have left (mostly non-conservative, non-MAGA older people). So the Bari Weiss "experiment" is probably going to be a disaster for CBS in terms of ratings and viewers.

Having said that, I don't think it matters because the real reason CBS is shifting to the MAGA right isn't to gain viewers, it's to keep Trump 2.0 happy and off the backs of the network's new owners, who just happen to be Trump fans. As long as CBS News is doing their bidding then my guess is the new owners will be willing to put up with bad ratings and reviews and even public derision, at least for a good while. They're not looking at improving ratings, they're looking at keeping an audience of one - Donald J. Trump - happy with them.
