The basket hasn't, but the offense has. We're now getting the right folks shots in the right places...stuff like getting the VAL the ball in the post in position to score and getting Ian and even Withers open looks from 3 (rather than Drake or Cadeau) in rhythm. Some of this is simply shot-making, but part of the shot-making is that we're having the right players taking the right shots more often. The question, though, is that because we really did something great or because the teams we're playing just aren't quite as good at taking away what we want to do?
The easy answer is that it’s a mix of both. I think the team lost a lot of confidence after the tough non-conference stretch, which led to some ugly games early in ACC play again teams that we should have beaten easily. The competition during this streak has been pretty pathetic, but still have to give the team credit for taking care of business and building some momentum. Ultimately though I think it has to translate into a win against Dook (either next weekend or in the ACCT). I’m increasingly of the opinion that that’s the only way we can feel comfortable about making the tournament.

A bit? Through 4.5 games, we are shooting 49% from three. Yeah, I'd say that is a "bit" out of line for every team in the history of the NCAA.
Sure, but if we're really a 38% percent team from 3 and we've been shooting 30% on the season, then a stretch where we shoot really well to get closer to 38% isn't actually unexpected.

Yeah, that's why, except for outlier situations with unethical behavior or immediate health problems, I'm not for making coaching decisions mid-season. Once you say that it's over, the team often just goes through the motions until the end of the year.
Totally agree with this. I also think that, for as great of a person as he is and as accomplished of a coach as he was, the decision by Tony Bennett to retire basically a week and a half before the regular season began was really poor. Like Carolina, Virginia has been playing so much better of late. They would have almost certainly been an NCAA tournament team with Bennett coaching them, and he could’ve still walked away at the end of the season if he had wanted to. Same with Jim Larranaga.

But if you are really a 38% shooting team (and I don't think we are), you can't rely on 49% 3-point shooting to win games. That means you are scoring 6-9 points more a game than you should be scoring. Everything looks better when you are getting so many extra points a game.

That's true...which is why I'm interested to see if this improvement continues when we play a better team a couple of games from now.

IF we do not beat Duke or win the ACC tournament, and therefore do not make the NCAA tournament hypothetically, it feels to me like those back to back buzzer beater losses at home against Stanford and at Wake Forest will be daggers. Even with our quad one record being poor, feels to me like if either or both of those games go in our favor, it would be really difficult to leave a 15-5 ACC UNC team out regardless of the Q1 record.

Wake wasn't a buzzer beater loss. We hit a meaningless three at the buzzer to make it a 1-point game. That game was over with 30 seconds to play. But it is one of about 15 games we played this year where it was anyone's game at the under 4 time out.

Dang, my memory is getting terrible. You’re exactly right. I misremembered RJ Davis hitting that three pointer at the buzzer for Wake Forest hitting a shot at the buzzer.

I feel like over scheduling may have hurt this team. Not just with the W/L record but also the process of figuring things out.

Would 3 wins over mid majors instead 3 losses to top 5 teams put the Heels in a better overall position?

I think it’s more that HD/staff are doing different things to get them more good shots, using better lineups for their offensive schemes. Which is frustrating, considering these things have been pointed out for a long time. That this team is not a top 25 team is on HD and his staff.

Having said that, I am glad to see them having fun playing, just sucks that they have been let down by their coaches.

Probably. Otoh, with the portal situation, you have no idea who is going to be the equivalent of a mid major.
