NC shrimping ban

I am by no means a marine expert. I do know shrimp boats bounce chains off the sea/sound/creek bottom/ floor
Basically destroying everything while bouncing the shrimp up to be netted

Anyone else been following the proposed shrimping ban for the NC coast? Seems like things are getting heated.

Brunswick County man charged with threatening to kill NC senator over shrimp ban

Wow. That is the type of threat to be taken seriously.

Background:

“… H.B. 442 stems from mounting concerns over North Carolina’s declining inshore fish stocks. Assessments by the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission show significant drops in key populations. Southern flounder was declared overfished in 2019, weakfish has been depleted since 2003, and Atlantic croaker and spot fish are experiencing ongoing overfishing.

A 2017 assessment noted the bycatch of shrimp trawling accounted for 81% to 99% of Atlantic croaker’s annual removals. Flounder made upward of 33% bycatch discard, while weakfish contained around 8%.

The revised bill is sponsored by Jennifer Balkcom (R-Henderson), Brian Biggs (R-Randolph) and Alan Branson (R-Guilford); however, Bill Rabon (R-Brunswick), to the surprise of at least one of the cosponsors, added in the amendment to limit shrimping during the bill’s review in the Senate Agriculture, Energy, and Environment Committee on June 17. …”

I was at Topsail beach last week and was talking to some people about it. It was surprising to me that it had such wide, bi-partisan support. Apparently NC is one of the only (maybe the only) south east costal states without this ban. So I guess most people consider it good policy.

The North Carolina commercial fishing fleet is one of the most powerful lobbies in the state. Some of these guys are barely literate but they know how to work the lobbying process and they send the checks.

I can certainly sympathize with people that have a mortgage on a commercial trawler more than our house but ecologically, they are a disaster. They have been overfishing for years and whenever someone raises the issue of catch limitations to maintain fish stocks, these guys go ballistic. And it works just about every time.

about sums it up.

their own people doing the tyranny must be really confusing for them, lmao.
all the right wingers here are constantly frothing at the mouth about development too, namely proposed cluster housing projects in wanchese, manteo and manns harbor that they've gone ballistic about and mostly managed to stop and i'm like.....this is what/who you voted for, you fuckwits.

Let 'em over fish themselves out of existence. With fewer immigrant laborers, we are going to have much need for roofers, etc.

Have been at Ocean Isle Beach in Brunswick County for two weeks now and haven’t seen one shrimp boat.
