In the late ‘80’s/early ‘90’s, a significant percentage of Carolina fans wondered LOUDLY that the game had “passed Dean Smith by.”

Lots of stupid “fans” in the world.
2013, 2014 and 2015 - Many said the same thing about Ole' Roy. Game had passed him by, can't recruit, etc....

As to Kansas, I think more and more teams are going to have wild swings from year to year. Coaches are having to rebuild every year. If you don't get the roster right, you're going to be bad. Roster management, identifying needs and how they fit together is by far the most important part of coaching at the moment.

"you're going to be bad" with "bad" being relative to what the fan-base has grown accustom. "Bad" for State would be significantly worse than "bad" for Carolina, of course. And Roster management now falls on the shoulders of the GM, not the head coach. Example: Snit with the Braves can't squeeze blood out of the turnips if that's all AA can send him.

But the similarities are there: Dean, Roy and now Hubert have all 3 had their turn on the fan-base hot seat in terms of "can't recruit" game's passed them by/can't coach today's game with the system you're running, etc.

The ACC is clearly hideously bad. Wouldn't shock me at all to see us both kicked out this weekend. It's just pathetic

So true. I remember attending a large Ram's Club event at the Ritz in Atlanta with Dean as the featured speaker (a rarity as he hated those events) in that 1990 period. I was lucky enough to sit at his table. I was shocked at the questions he received - implying that that he could no longer recruit or coach in the "modern" game.

Nothing beats money and the ACC is going to have to pony up or see more seasons like this.
True, but only d00k has been ponying up the real ca$h the past 15 years. With most of that being against the rules as they were before NIL. All those "stories" about Zion and such... all that shit was true. d00k has been buying their players with serious ca$h for a long, long time. Did UNC or other schools have alumni give a few kids some "$100 handshakes" over that same period? Probably. But heck Carolina hasn't doled out the serious coin like d00k, even now when it's been legal and above board, so you KNOW they didn't pony up the same sort of moolah as the d00kies over time. You KNOW IT! It doesn't take a long memory to recall all of the "misses" Roy and gang went through in the past 10 years. To say nothing of the misses Hubert suffered this past off-season.

I went 13-3 on Day 1. My misses were Kansas, Mizzou, and Louisville. Yes, I picked McNeese over Clemson. I heard an interview with Will Wade on the radio earlier in the week that discussed how he was a Clemson alum and began his coaching career there as a GA. I just got a feeling he was gonna beat his alma mater and went with it.

Yes, it's definitely all relative. The expectation is that UNC should finish top 3 in the conference almost every year. I'm not sure that will be reasonable going forward. Look at KU and UCONN this year. Will they reload with the "right" roster next year?

sort of related themes but this is still a bit generous to HD. neither dean nor roy were ever truly on any sort of hot seat whereas HD genuinely needs good results next season or else.

moronic fans discontented vs. results being truly unacceptable.
