NCAAT: San Diego State Biorhythms, 9:10 Tip

The narratives still echoed by Seth Davis and John Rothstein, etc. that UNC didn’t deserve to be in need to be stopped immediately. The goal of all the data (quad 1 and all the metrics) is to help identify the best teams. That’s the goal. Get the best teams in. UNC beat the dog shit out of SDSU and likely would again and again. SDSU stinks. If any team didn’t belong, it’s them.
Eh. The question of whether you deserved to make it is really separate from how you do once there.

Suppose the tourney let in a 15-15 team from the Mountain West. Then the team wins its playoff game and a first round game. Did they deserve to be selected? I would say no.

But shouldn’t be separate over whether we are favored by five points.

If the predictive metrics think we are five points better than SDSU, then we should be in over SDSU. The point of the tournament is to put in the best teams, not the teams with the most Quad 1 wins.

Sure, the actual results in the tournament shouldn’t matter. But the fact that we would have been favored over basically every other 9-11 seed is pretty telling as to whether we were deserving.

Right. That's a good argument. The "we destroyed them" is less good. Not irrelevant, but not that convincing.

Agreed. It’s like picking the 6 megabucks numbers after the ping pong balls have dropped. Shouldn’t use after acquired information to judge the correctness of a decision.

The fact they let in teams from every division 1 conference makes the whole quad 1 win argument null in the first place. It's really who were the best teams in their conference and the best teams compared to other teams from similar size schools. Why aren't teams from the mid-majors looked at for quad 1 wins? How come they are not judged on the competition they play like the Power 4 conferences are? If the goal is to get the best 64 teams than a whole lot of teams should be in over the ones from the lower conferences.

This game was at night and he was able to get nourishment before the game and drink liquids during the game. That won’t be the case with a 4 PM start Friday vs Ol’ Miss. (and yes, I know that’s not how the rubes in Mississippi spell it. They’re wrong.)
He needs a BIG breakfast at 6:30 AM with a gallon of water.

Well, a big problem with the super-conferences is that there is little meaningful inter-conference interaction after December. So what we're seeing is a bunch of SEC teams doing well against SEC teams that were good in December. Once conference play starts, there's really no way for a conference to catch up from a slow start.

I mean, those SEC teams might all be good. But it's hard to know because the interconference matrix is so dated.

San Diego State is a joke.

One more reason for the big conferences to break away and have everyone under one umbrella with regions.

Only 2 TO’s

His game and RJs game yesterday is what this team has been missing all year long. That and JWits 3’s and Lubin in for JWash. 26 from your top gun and 12 & 2 from your point guard can win a lot of games.
Having Ian, Seth and JWash coming in off the bench is a pretty good 8… as long as RJ and Elliot play like they did.

Perhaps, but they did beat #1 seed Houston on a neutral court and they have the #1 defense on shot % and the #19 over all defense in D1. Those are some pretty good facts on which to hang a hat. They’re young and missed their top gun all season.
He was a bit scattershot last night.

All this with a limited front court that is just now starting to put it together

If you think back to early in the season, they weren't even attempting to look inside. Then there was the stretch where they went really small and whoever played the 5 struggled

Major credit to HD for figuring out the VAL role and of course VAL himself for sticking with it

The fact that we are also favored over a 6th seed is equally telling.

Honestly the only thing I remember from the early, early season was going to Memphis (#5 seed Memphis BTW) and handling their arse w/out too much difficulty AT THEIR HOUSE, IIRCC. 84-76. Literally a Q1 win, if not technically a Q1. Of course it was an "exhibiton" game that didn't count. Seth going off and getting a career high (that didn't count, ugh!). He was around 30 pts for the game. After that I felt good about this team

Also RJ didn’t play.
