The Rams are arguably the best team in football (they have the second best point differential, only to Seattle) but are sitting in third place in the division. If they win out, as seems likely, they will move up to second unless Seattle and SF tie, but they can't finish first.
The NFC West was a joke about a decade ago, but it's probably been the best division in football for the last few years at least, and by a fair margin too.
This year, NFC West teams have the three best point differentials in the NFC, and the top two in the NFL.
Rams have the toughest SOS in the league not counting bottom feeders (who always have strong schedules because they don't get to play themselves), and the only strength of victory above .500. And they were the only team to beat the Colts in the first half of the season, before the wheels came off the latter.
