british news is all over the story here. An American sailor on the tanker spoke anonymously, saying he was near the impact site and he could see into the freighter bridge and it was empty at the time of the crash.

As Trump Courts Putin, Russians Keep Trying to Kill Americans

The “gray zone” war on America and its allies isn’t going to stop.

“…
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has attacked the United States and Europe on a near-daily basis using what are often referred to as “hybrid” operations, meant to hide the hand of the Russian government and to remain below the threshold of war so as not to trigger a response.

Russia has conducted cyberattacks on water facilities in the United States, including one in Texas that led a tank to overflow for 45 minutes. Senior British officials have blamed Russia for flying drones over U.K. air force bases where American military personnel are stationed. Russian proxies are suspected of having left explosives near a pipeline supplying air force bases in western Germany. A number of suspicious fires have broken out at weapons manufacturing facilities that supply arms to Ukraine, including at a General Dynamics ammunition plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania in April and another at a BAE Systems facility in the United Kingdom the following day. A separate explosion in July at a General Dynamics plant in Arkansas left one person dead.

Before the war began, Russia was already targeting Americans. Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU, paid the Taliban and other militia bounties to attack American soldiers in Afghanistan, with an offer of Russian documents and asylum in return. The GRU is also the likely culprit behind “Havana syndrome” or “anomalous health incidents,” attacks from a directed-energy weapon that have left hundreds of American diplomats and intelligence officers and their families—including children—with traumatic brain injury and other cognitive ailments.

Had such attacks been carried out by al Qaeda, ISIS, or Hezbollah, the response would have been swift and severe.

It's hard to understand why President Trump is ready to make deals with Vladimir Putin, when it is clear Putin has given his blessing for these and other operations that have led to American deaths. …”

“…A reporter asked the president what responsibility he felt for the civil servants who had lost their jobs during Wednesday’s Oval Office meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.

“I feel very badly, but many of them don’t work at all,” Trump replied just one day after cutting nearly half of the Education Department’s staff.

”Many of them never showed up to work. Many of them, many of them never showed up to work," he repeated.

The president insisted that the job cuts are targeted at “the people that aren’t working or are not doing a good job,” a message echoed by the department’s Secretary, Linda McMahon. …”

Trump calls Schumer a ‘Palestinian’ while defending GOP spending bill, egg prices and tariff policy

The comment came during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin as Republicans try to get a government spending bill enacted before funding runs out on Friday evening.

“… “Schumer is a Palestinian, as far as I’m concerned,” Trump said in response to a question about the U.S. corporate tax rate during an Oval office meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin. “He’s become a Palestinian. He used to be Jewish. He’s not Jewish anymore.”

Schumer is Jewish and not of Palestinian heritage.

The president routinely likened Schumer to “a Palestinian” during the campaign, at one point calling Schumer a “proud member of Hamas.” Trump also routinely criticized Jews that planned to support Democrats in the November election, calling them “fools” who need “their head examined.”

The comment came as Republicans are trying to get a government spending bill enacted before funding runs out on Friday evening. Republicans would need at least eight Democratic votes in the Senate, assuming the GOP remains aligned in support. …”

“… Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, reframed the purpose of the E.P.A. In a two-minute-and-18-second video posted to X, Mr. Zeldin boasted about the changes and said his agency’s mission is to “lower the cost of buying a car, heating a home and running a business.”

“From the campaign trail to Day 1 and beyond, President Trump has delivered on his promise to unleash energy dominance and lower the cost of living,” Mr. Zeldin said. “We at E.P.A. will do our part to power the great American comeback.”

Nowhere in the video did he refer to protecting the environment or public health, twin tenets that have guided the agency since its founding in 1970. …”

Possibly, but if he (or anyone) gets it right, how many lives are saved a year?
Too many variables. How widely are they used, how autonomous they are, insurance provisions, development of proximity sensors on cars with drivers and such. I don't see such cars being made mandatory and I don't see many people wanting to mostly drive themselves.

If you just want to get people somewhere efficiently and safely , focus on mass transportation.

So rip up a lane or two of every freeway and install rail? And stations somewhere at the interchanges? Love the idea but seems that ship sailed 50+ years ago with the auto lobbying and highway build out. Self driving cars can utilize existing infrastructure.

But I guess buses could utilize existing infrastructure

I'm not against them. I just don't see the appeal. Of course, I grew up in ENC in the 60s with all the muscle cars where driving was fun.

So, he's going to do away with emissions and bring back leaded gas?
