After the extreme disappointment in our country on election night I came to the realization that I am extremely proud of my 52 year old wife and 30 and 27 year old daughters for not being Trump supporters and having good values and morals. I got emotional telling them how proud I was of them and that at the end of the day that is all that matters. Fuck Donald Trump and fuck MAGA!

So you wouldn’t be proud of them if they voted for the nation’s other major political party? Wow, this is why families break apart for stupid political differences.

My wife, adult daughter and me are proud Republicans/MAGA. My adult son is a Romney type Republican who hates Trump and voted for Kamala. I consider all of us to be good and intelligent citizens; moral people; well educated; and productive members of society. He just sees certain issues differently and that’s OK.

Politics should not be a religion.

This board has been filled with dramatic posts. Many from people who seem like they’re teetering on the edge of a mental health crisis.

No, and you would not be proud of family who supported a Democrat who behaved like Trump.

You are blinded to what Trump is. MAGA gets all outraged because Biden misspoke and appeared to say Trump supporters were trash - something he immediately backtracked on. Meanwhile, MAGA talk about openly killing their political opposition. MAGA is infested with Q-anon who claim that Democrats torture and eat young children. Trump on many occasions has given implicit approval of Q-anon. He calls people who have differing political opinions "the enemy within."

So, no, with the way that MAGA treats anyone on the left (or really anyone on the right who doesn't like Trump), it is valid to be ashamed of people you know who are MAGA.

MAGA, like religion, is absolutely a cult.

I don’t police my family’s religion or politics. Or really anything. Family should be cherished. Discuss away, but once you start creeping into judging and pride and disappointment, it can all start to get away from you. I know my dad refused to talk to my aunt one Thanksgiving over an election vote she made. Things were fine by Christmas, but I found it off-putting and incongruous with the dad I knew.

I have plenty of extended family members that are republicans. I couldn’t disagree more with their worldviews, but I never voluntarily bring up politics around them, most of them never bring it up either, and we can get along fine at holidays or family gatherings or whatever else.

My FIL is the one MAGA Republican that I’m close with that just can’t help but shoehorn Trump or politics into every conversation, without fail. It’s weird because most outspoken MAGA people that I know seem to have extremely antagonistic and cynical personalities, whereas he is outgoing and friendly to everyone. Guy just can’t help but randomly bring up politics at every turn though and it gets very grating very quickly.

If not supporting a political party makes him proud then it stands to reason that supporting said party would not make him proud. That’s how it works, I’m trying to figure out what insane participation trophy you’re demanding.

Many people don’t consider Trumpers to be good people. That bothers you? To borrow a phrase thrown at offended people: suck it up, buttercup.
Doesn’t bother me at all but that type of attitude (considering Rs garbage) is partially why the Ds are completely out of power and will remain so until they come to at least respect 50%+ of their fellow citizens.

Respectfully disagree. That isn’t why Democrats are out of power . They’re out of power for the same exact reasons that quite literally every single other incumbent party in every other developed country in the world has lost their respective elections this year and last year: perceived out of control cost of living/inflation.

If the reason that Democrats were out of power was because they “call Trump supporters garbage”, why are Republicans *in power* after calling Democrats garbage (and worse)? That logic doesn’t compute.

Exactly, so why has maga become a cult?

The man is simply horrible in every way. I'm not going to list the multiple reasons he's a bad person. This is why I am so puzzled that some good people voted for him.

I would never disown family for something as stupid as a vote, but I would want to understand how a child of mine could vote for such a horrible person.

This isn't some unique phenomenon in the US where Trump and Republicans are going to redefine America. It's a global reaction to a pandemic and inflation with a heavy dose of disinformation.

You can still love your fambly and not be proud of them for particular choices. Would you be proud of your son or daughter if they were heroin addicts? Does that mean you wouldn't still love them?

Exactly, if the democrat candidate acted like trump, I could not vote for that person.

I couldn't vote for anyone that acted like trump.

I actually voted conservative for president my entire life until 2016. When he became the candidate I knew I could not vote for him.

I would never make a general statement that all republicans are garbage. Blanket statements like that are stupid.

trump is a piece of shit, which is puzzling that some people I know that I otherwise respect would vote for him.

Hearing a co-worker say that they knew he was a piece of shit, but they had to hold their nose and vote for the party, now how can anyone respect that?

What is it that makes you want to vote for him? Which policy? Or do you simply like your leaders to constantly call people names and make fun of disabled people, veterans, and pretty much anyone that doesn't worship him?

Is it his promise to deport 15 million immigrants? Most I've spoke with that support this haven't really considered the economic impacts when we don't have these people in the work force. And the lies he constantly told that all immigrants are murders, criminals, or mental patients is simply that, a fucking lie.

Is it the authoritarian position that he believes he should be the supreme leader and be able to fire anyone in government that doesn't bow down to him?

Which policy got your vote? Or do you simply, blindly vote republican?

So you wouldn’t be proud of them if they voted for the nation’s other major political party?
It has nothing to do with which party they voted for.

It has to do with voting for a decent person.

If my daughter had voted Obama, while I voted Romney that wouldn't bother me at all.

In my life I've never worried that our democracy may well be at risk if a certain candidate won, until Jan 6th and trump proved that he didn't give a fuck about our country, only being worshiped. Which is pretty obvious from every aspect of his life and what he constantly says.

All issues aside, I don't understand how anyone outside the immediate cult could vote for such a person.
