Random question about vacationing...

Parents live on Gaston. They don't really go out anymore. Boat hasn't left the boathouse in 3 years I think.
We did not get the Boat out at all . Big dock on a relatively private bay-the kids just jump off the dock and scream all day

Honestly I figured it was just me being very odd.

As an example, I was offered to use this house to have both of our families for Christmas and politely declined. That interaction is what prompted the post.

I would probably decline that too. The Outer Banks are just too damn far from the NC population centers to drive to (especially for Christmas.) My answer would be different if I lived in Tidewater or somewhere closer.

No place makes me feel at peace more than the mountains in NC. Sure, there are more visually spectacular mountains elsewhere. I think the age of the mountains in NC is equally awe inspiring. Plus the temperate rainforest climate is pretty rare, and it’s a climate I really enjoy.
Same. Especially the smokies for me. There’s just something different about west of Asheville to me.

We have been going to Ocean Isle Beach for almost 50 years. My parents had a condo there for almost 40 years. To my grandchildren it’s the only beach.
We’ve been going to Holden since I was a kid in the 80’s. Every single summer.

Wmheel, I have a job where I frequently travel to NC and SC and across the Country to very nice places for work. Having seen and stayed at some of the best resorts and hotels in America, places like Charleston, Hilton Head, Asheville, and Greenville SC match the best places in the country. There are some incredible towns in Western NC and on the Coast of NC and SC that truly are world class. Dig in a little bit and you can save a lot on air travel but put that into the resorts and have an amazing experience.

So worth it though. The northern outer banks may be my favorite place on earth.

Yep, I used to travel almost weekly for public speaking so I've seen a ton of places. At this point, our travels tend to be international. We can only travel when my better half is out of school so that limits us to Spring Break and summer. Most weekends are taken up with UNC or Michigan sports. This summer we spent 8 days in Omaha for the CWS and then nearly 3 weeks in Italy. After that, I started back teaching night classes and we've stayed home. He goes back to school this week so our only travels will be to the Big House and Ford Field. Headed up in a couple weeks to the Michigan/Texas game and the Lions play the Rams the following night.

Last summer we did a Mediterranean Cruise and a week in Greece in July then took our parents to Alaska in August.

So maybe it is really that we are so constrained as to the "when" that we both just want to get the hell away....far, far, away. Sometimes I feel like the only way I can disconnect from work is to be so many time zones off that contact isn't feasible for much of the day. I love being in Europe when my day is basically over before anyone here would even have questions that need answering.

At the moment I live in two places that are vacation destinations: Asheville and NYC. And I mostly drive between them because my dogs go with me. Wife used to live in Bermuda and I call Guatemala my second home so we aim for those spots for vacations (Central America is so much more economical than Bermuda that we go there about twice as often). Both places are full of friends that are locals so we get some ‘insider’ stuff.

The next place I want to take my family for vacation is Cartagena - for adventure, Peru.

Work had me on planes every Monday and Friday at the end of my career, i'm not flying anywhere. I'm usually in one of three places in this state, Charlotte, Pinehurst or Wrightsville Beach, before Memorial Day or after Labor Day, not in between. If i leave the state i'm usually in Charleston, one of my brothers has a place down there that we all use for get togethers. I may be in The Wade or at Carter Finley with my brothers on any given Saturday, depending on the importance of the game, and in Cameron in the Winter.

When I lived in Manhattan, I was surprised at how many people from the Philly area went to the OBX; they were equally surprised at how few times I’d been. Then, we compared drive times - not just Philly to OBX compared to Triangle to OBX; but, also Triangle to Emerald Isle or Wrightsville or Sunset.

Most North Carolinians don’t realize how far east the OBX are…..Yankees definitely don’t know.

Also, North Carolina built a bunch of 4-lane, limited access highways through the coastal plain - dropping drive times a ton; but, the perception still exists that the OBX ARE OUT THERE. Just reaching Nags Head doesn’t mean you’ve made it to Corolla or Rodanthe.

My dad is from Edenton and grew up going to Nags Head in the summer. Because of that and because my great uncle and aunt owned a cottage there, we went to Nags Head for our beach trip for several years when I growing up. Back then, it was an 8-hour drive from Charlotte. (Now you can get from Charlotte to Nags Head in about 6 hours if there are no issues with traffic). We’d spend two weeks up there, drive back to Charlotte, and then about a week later drive up to our family cottage in the NY Finger Lakers, which was a 13-hour drive back then (11 hours now).

One thing I’d like to do when my wife and I have enough time to do it is to get in the car and, over the course of about two weeks, travel through the NC mountains and hit all the nice NC mountain towns.

Which Finger Lake? I used to spend a lot of time at Canandaigua Lake. Love the Finger Lakes - except for the over abundance of Trump and Confederate flags in recent years.

We used to drive up to Rochester each summer and Christmas. Going through all those towns and small cities up the Susquehanna Valley took forever.

Our place is on Seneca Lake.

My GF and I got 2 free 10-day cruises each from status matches in AC casinos a year and a half ago. We each used one last year to go to Mexico (me with my boys and her with a friend) and it was an awful experience so we did things different this year.

We chose to use our 2nd cruises back to back in the Mediterranean. Starting in Istanbul and going to Greece, Eastern Italy & Southern Turkie then flying to Marseille with 3 days on the Riviera and Monoco then our second cruise from France went to Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, & Western Italy. We then flew to Ireland for a few days then home.

All told it was 9 countries, 3 continents in 28 days with 13000+ photos & 57 videos of the best vacation I've ever taken.
