Because the FAFO thread was starting to veer into a theological discussion, I thought it might be appropriate to start a religion thread. If I may "testify" for a moment, I used to be a Christian. I enjoyed the fellowship of a small church. I've got years of perfect attendance pins to prove it. I participated in the youth choir. I even toured around Virginia in a gospel quartet for a couple of years.

But now, I'm agnostic at best. I'm generally in the "do whatever religion you want if it brings you peace and doesn't hurt anyone else" school. The problem is that, in my humble opinion, too many are being hurt by religion. I've gotten to the point where I stay away from overly religious people and their social malignancy.

Possibly the FAFO thread was the best forum for religious discussion. After all, many believe that after the FA, the FO is hell. For others, both the FA and FO are roads worth travelling.

Quartet eh? Bass or Tenor? Or am I all wrong here?

A healthy sense of agnosticism is a good thing. I don’t care who you are.

What's your issue with this?

I thought America was founded on religious freedom?
Adjusting a noise ordinance to accommodate a specific religion SHOULD be viewed as a constitutional issue.

Additionally, no religion should be permitted to blast their nonsense across society, especially in violation of a noise ordinance.

@UNCMSinLS I typed out a nice response and was going to engage in this discussion, but Zen has already fucked it up, something he's good at.

Maybe we can leave this one for complaining about people exercising their religious freedom against Zen's will and start a new thread for an actual religious discussion.

Maybe we can get some of the more educated people to share their knowledge of religious history and theology.

A constitutional issue? Really? I guess we will see if it makes it to the SCOTUS.

And you believe this is something new? Have you ever been to a revival in the south?

Maybe the frequency is different, but those revivals were loud and bothered everyone around the stadium.

So, would you feel differently if this were Christians asking for this?
A noise ordinance is to limit specific noise levels to certain times of day. That shouldn't be changed for any religion.

I sang everything from low bass to high falsetto tenor, but I mostly sang lead. We performed everything from classic hymns to Andre Crouch to Bill Gaither. Our sound was not dissimilar to The Statler Brothers or the Oak Ridge Boys. We had fun with it & acquired a bit of a following. But once we graduated from high school, we went our separate ways.

Yeah, I'm tired of Church chimes, bell towers and I can't tell you how much I hate Christmas carols.

The issue isn't the noise. The issue is changing noise ordinance to accommodate religion.
You don't think there's not an implicit carve out for Christians? What a Maroon. (No offense, Jamaica). Back in the 60s, the Baptist church in the town where I lived played religious music from speakers in the steeple at noon and six. That was scarcely unusual.

You can't imagine how tempted I was when they fired my stepfather for the effrontery of actually inviting migrant workers to worship at the church on Annie Armstrong Day (celebrating home missions) to going in, putting on Cheap Thrills and nailing the door to the closet for the turntable shut on our way out of town.

organized religions are and have been responsible for more pain and suffering to humanity than all others combined
While your claim may be slightly hyperbolic, I agree with your point. But I would distinguish that the pain and suffering was brought on by men seeking power and control rather than the religious beliefs themselves. It's just a variation of facism in convincing people how bad "the others" are and how it justifies their violence.

Much of that is how you view the counterreaction to organized religions which would include many of the excesses of the socialist regimes. It doesn't justify either side, of course. Religion might have prompted that counterreaction but isn't responsible for the tactics.

Yea man. It's funny how a bass singer can go falsetto and hit that soprano range. E'rebody be like: "Dude!"
