I expect that the attitudes toward vaccines were a lot more favorable then than now. They had a much better idea of the risk/ gain side of things. I expect a lot more people either buried a child or knew someone who did because they didn't previously have a vaccine.

In fairness, autism wasn't even recognized at that time, but ,also in fairness, neither the scope or cause of autism is understood now. There's no reason to let that fear have any sway.
But does any reasonable person think the best way to fine the cause of autism is a game of vaccine Jenga? Placing my bet on science.

I am extremely confident that autism is not caused by any vaccine or external anything. It has a strong genetic component. I am also extremely confident that it is not related to an pathogen that could be vaccinated.

I wonder if one reason that autism diagnoses have skyrocketed is that autism became more respected. Suicide rates among autistic people dropped a lot, and one also wonders if they were more accepted socially. In other words, maybe one reason autism is more common these days (assuming arguendo that it is more common and not just a measurement artefact) is that autistic people are having more children.

My guess is part measurement artifact, part broadening of the diagnosis and very large part the fact that it's accepted as a condition at all with its own problems and ways of coping so even borderline cases are seeking help.

I’d throw in older parents as a contributing factor, too.

Is the age of the parents a known factor for autism?

I know the average age of childbirth has gone up considerably but , considering the absence of birth control, the number of women who kept having babies until menopause and the lack of support and understanding of the needs of pregnancies late in life for women when autism was first being diagnosed and I wonder if there's an increase in the absolute effect of age.

Yes. For both men and women, especially after 30 for women and 40 for men.

I mean, it is still a very small chance. But it is less small as the parents age.

Glad to see Louisiana taking a leadership role in advancing public health. Hopefully this bill will become law, demonstrate a robust impact on the wellbeing of Louisianans, and proliferate throughout the US. Frankly, I don’t think anyone should fly when it’s cold out.

The bill passed the LA house 58-32.

Remember when Bobby Jindal encouraged Republicans to stop being the stupid party? And, subsequently, backed away from those comments.

“Barium. There is a few, some with long words that I can’t pronounce,” Coates said.

No, you probably can't, Ms. Coates. Because thinkin' about dem few wurds is hard.

That, and those people are not locked away out of sight anymore, and many children attend Public schools, which previously was unheard of.

Yep. I have been getting all of my vaccines at CVS and insurance has covered everyone. Could I get it at my doctor’s office? More than likely. But while it is cheaper it is much less convenient. And some people don’t have a PCP so that makes it more difficult because you’re probably not an established patient anywhere. Novel idea. Maybe they should just stop f’ing with vaccines.
1. Just make sure your PCP knows and is updating your records- they could be getting dinged for you not being “up to date” even though you are and
2. If you have Medicare, much preferable to get in the pharmacy- they will cover the shots at the pharmacy but not all of them at the doctors office

Yep, my PCP knows as I make him aware. Believe what I get done at CVS is able to be seen by my PCP as well. Not yet on Medicare but good to know.
