RIP Hulk Hogan

I remember my papa (who loved wrestling) giving my grandma grief all the time for watching her shows (soap operas) asking me once if I liked watching wrestling. The look on his his face when I said I didn't like sports soap operas was one I'll never forget because it clicked that's exactly what he was watching. And I don't think he ever said much of anything about my grandma watching soap operas after that.

And I'm not a hater or anything (watch whatever floats your boat) but if you didn't outgrow watching wrestling, well.....

It’s not terribly surprising that folks who do the work to get famous as the product in an exploitative industry turn out to be crummy, exploitative folks once they have fame & power. (This is true for both professional wrestling & reality tv.)
I do think things are better now in the wrestling industry than they were before the 2010s. Most of the talent now seem like genuinely good people.

I do think that guy had the best heel turn in history. He had been a baby face for decades at that point. The baby face of WWE/WWF. Then he goes to WCW and they have that incredible run with the NWO. I do think WCW could have probably done that gimmick without him but that heel turn was something only he could have done.

I agree that things are probably better in professional wrestling than they've ever been. The more that the business gets away from the era of the domineering carnie-style owner/promoter and more into an era of being led by real companies/business professionals, the better things will likely continue to get. (IOW, the less McMahon has to do with the business, the better it will be.)

I'm guessing what it takes to succeed in professional wrestling has changed somewhat over the last 15-20 years and so the folks who rise to the top has changed, as well.

I had to google “heel turn” to confirm what I thought you meant. I knew who Hulk Hogan was but I never considered whether he was a good guy or a bad guy.

I’m kind of intrigued by this thread since I’ve never given two shits about wrestling or wrestlers since I was maybe 9 years old watching the old Jim Crockett Promotions wrestlers on B&W TV on Saturday afternoons in the mid-60s. I am fascinated that there is this much interest in a wrestling character among grown men on this board.

It's just all theater. Good vs evil with some incredible athleticism thrown in.

I was around the same age when I moved on from wrestling, but as your childhood had Crockett promotions, mine had Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Randy Savage and other wrestlers in what I would consider the peak of professional wrestling characters.

But to your point, I am shocked how many adults seem to still follow it. To each their own.
