After Trump Deal, Ukraine’s Fortunes Hinge on How Fast NATO Can Deliver Arms

President’s agreement to sell advanced arms to European allies so they can pass them to Kyiv is milestone in three-year-old war

“… The promised buildup in Ukraine’s defenses, announced Monday at the White House by Trump and North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary-General Mark Rutte, depends on getting enough Patriots into the country quickly, and in the long run stepping up the West’s production of interceptors for shooting down Russian drones and ballistic missiles, analysts said.

“The Russian tactic is to get the Ukrainians to waste all their existing air-defense stocks and leave them exposed to a late summer or fall offensive,” said Celeste Wallander, who was a senior Pentagon official in the Biden administration. “If this is going to change Putin’s calculation on whether he will win, substantial deliveries would have to be carried out through the summer.”

Trump’s decision is still a milestone. His agreement to sell advanced arms to European allies so they can pass them to Kyiv marks the first time the White House has agreed to furnish weapons for Ukraine that go beyond the deliveries former President Joe Biden set in motion before leaving office.…”
“… The ability of the U.S. and allies to provide air defenses to Ukraine, particularly against the growing threat of ballistic missiles, is limited not just by the cost of the Patriot systems but also by the West’s limited production capacity.

“Glass half full: Trump is giving Putin the real deadline of 50 days with a clear consequence if he doesn’t move to a cease-fire. Glass half empty: 50 days is very far away when Ukraine is being hit by 700 drones a night,” said Kristine Berzina of the German Marshall Fund think tank.

“If Europeans send their existing Patriots to Ukraine and use the new supplies from the U.S. to backfill, then it will matter. But if Germany and others wait for new Patriot systems before sending more to Ukraine, the help will seem far too late,” Berzina said….”

——
But sending Ukraine Patriots that the Europeans have in hand now creates a risk of being double-crossed by Trump refusing to supply the replacements later.

A Day After Trump Promises New Arms for Ukraine, He Warns Kyiv Against Striking Moscow

His comments come less than two weeks after he asked if Kyiv was able to hit Moscow and St. Petersburg; White House says it was merely a question

“… Trump’s call for Ukraine to avoid hitting Moscow continued his pattern of swinging from pressure on one side to the other to end the war and underscored the uncertainties about his strategy.

Earlier this month, he counseled Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to take the war to Russia and asked whether Kyiv was able to hit Moscow and St. Petersburg, according to a senior Ukrainian official familiar with the exchange.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday offered a different interpretation of the call between the two leaders on July 4. Asked about it, Leavitt said Trump “was merely asking a question, not encouraging further killing.” She said he was “working tirelessly” to stop the war.

… The Ukrainian official familiar with the call said Zelensky suggested to the U.S. president during the conversation that Ukraine needed long-range precision American weapons, the sort that would make strikes inside Russia more damaging.

The official added that Trump’s specific style of communication often makes it hard to understand exactly what he means, so “everyone hears what they want to hear.”…”

Putin did fool Bush. Obama and Biden? LOL.
Obama may have wised up by the end, but his debate with Romney ("the 80's called..." and his hot mic moment with Medvedev ('tell Vladimir I will have more leeway after the election') were not shining moments.

Obviously not in ballpark of Trump's subservience to Putin, but nothing to brag about either, imo...

Russia may be getting their offensive going on the Eastern Front. Not sure if the early reports can be trusted. Hopefully not.

Protests Break Out as Ukraine Defangs Anticorruption Agency

Opponents say move is boldest in series of recent steps to centralize power around the president

“…The law effectively strips independence from Ukraine’s National Anticorruption Bureau, known as NABU, which was established in 2015 under pressure from the U.S. and other Western countries.

Protests erupted after the law was pushed through parliament on Tuesday, as more than 1,000 people gathered near the president’s office, shouting “shame” and “veto the law.” It was one of the largest demonstrations against Zelensky’s government since Russia invaded more than three years ago.

Zelensky’s office didn’t respond to requests for comment, nor did his Servant of the People party, which controls parliament.

Under the law, Ukraine’s prosecutor general will have sweeping powers over NABU and the special anticorruption prosecutor. The prosecutor general is appointed by the president, effectively giving Zelensky power to block investigations into members of his administration.

“What’s happening is the demolition of the anticorruption infrastructure in Ukraine,” said Daria Kaleniuk, co-founder of the nongovernmental Anticorruption Action Center, who helped establish NABU after the 2014 revolution toppled a pro-Russian leader. She added that in recent months the U.S. seems to have dropped its emphasis on anticorruption efforts in Ukraine, which has freed the government’s hand to defang NABU.…”

How is it that Zelensky is backing down when the Bill was passed by over a 90 percent vote I think it was reported? Is he allowed to veto a vote count like that?

Anyway, there are reports that this is really an effort to correct corruption within NABU that had developed. Not surprising considering the deeply imbeded Russian/Soviet corruption that the country inherited from before 2014.

Trump says he’ll start clock on new Ukraine ceasefire deadline ‘tonight or tomorrow’

President Donald Trump said he is "very disappointed" in Russia's Vladimir Putin and said he’s cutting Moscow’s 50-day deadline to avoid secondary sanctions on Russian oil to between 10 and 12 days from now unless Putin brings his three-year-old war on Ukraine to an end.

“…
While he refused to say whether he felt Putin had been "lying" to him, Trump highlighted the contrast between the Russian president's rhetoric during their one-on-one conversations and the missiles "lobbed" on Ukrainian cities on a near-nighlty basis.

"We were going to have a ceasefire and maybe peace... and all of a sudden you have missiles flying into Kyiv and other places," Trump lamented, adding that he thought negotiations would be possible but that it was now "very late down the process".

"I say, forget it. I'm not gonna talk anymore. This has happened on too many occasions and I don't like it," he said, though he also insisted that he and Putin always got along very well.

Trump also said he was "no longer interested in talks" - a line which instantly flashed up on major Russian media outlets.

Putin has never commented on the timeframe. … All of Russia's preconditions for peace - including Ukraine becoming a neutral state, dramatically reducing its military and abandoning its Nato aspirations - are unacceptable to Kyiv and to its Western partners.

At the last week's round of talks, which lasted barely an hour, Peskov said a "breakthrough" in negotiations was "hardly possible".…”

Even Trump knows how stupid he would sound if he did the "two weeks" thing again.

Medvedev is the former president of Russia and more or less Putin’s resident shit-poster.
