Life means so little to Putin and Russia, so I doubt the inclusion of ethnic Russians has anything to do with it. Its just a propaganda excuse that the Russian state has used for hundreds of years.

Land, well Russia already has plenty of that which expands over 11 time zones. Now I do buy that Putin would like an Ukrainian puppet state and he's willing to fight on as long as his military or economy allows it to get an outcome like that.
The only reason I say that is that is exactly what he did in Georgia. Russia was probably powerful enough to annex the whole country but they stopped at the regions with a lot of ethnic russians. Which is probably for the best. Why deal with a bunch of people that are going to hate you for the next 20 years until you get weak enough that they successfully rebel.

Russia's been using puppet government's for a long time. Warsaw Pact is an example. Far more efficient and less messy. Result still the same. Pretty sure when they invaded Ukraine three years ago that they had a puppet government ready to go.

“… Lavrov also asserted that attempts to “entice” Putin with the restoration of US-Russian trade will also not end Russia’s war.

Lavrov claimed that Russia would view any European forces deployed to postwar Ukraine as “legitimate military targets.” Lavrov’s statements follow similar statements from other high-ranking Kremlin officials in recent weeks, rejecting post-war Western security guarantees for Ukraine.”

Poland scrambles aircraft as Russia fires hundreds of drones and missiles at Ukraine

Polish and allied aircraft were deployed early on Saturday to ensure the safety of Polish airspace after Russia launched airstrikes targeting western Ukraine near the border with Poland, armed forces of the Nato-member country said.

“Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness,” the operational command said in a post on X.

At 03.40 British time, nearly all of Ukraine was under air raid alerts after Ukrainian air force warnings of Russian missile and drone attacks.

Shortly after 05.00 British time, Polish and allied air forces ended the operation as airstrikes by the Russian Federation against Ukraine were ceased, the Polish command said, adding that the actions were “preventative and aimed at securing airspace in areas adjacent to the threatened area”.

The move comes after Russia fired 40 missiles and about 580 drones at Ukraine in a “massive attack” that killed three and wounded dozens, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday.

“Every such strike is not a military necessity but a deliberate strategy by Russia to terrorise civilians and destroy our infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said on social media, urging Kyiv’s allies to provide more air defence systems and hit Moscow with extra sanctions.

I didn’t need the Alaska meeting to reach that conclusion.
Agree. There is no way he would be escalating the war the way he has recently if didn’t he assurances from Trump the US wouldn’t do anything. Trump might make statements expressing discontent with Putin’s actions, but when it comes to it Trump isn’t going to do anything. Unfortunately.

"convinced" doing a lot of work in that headline. My gut tells me there was a lot less "convincing" and a lot more "horse trading" going on. After any of these summits always ask yourself what each of the respective parties got out of it.
