Say what you want about him, but Sean O’Brien’s new podcast is an example of what kind of media people on the left need to be doing. He’s had on some interesting guests from left and right so far. It’s a casual conversation and feels real and direct, which is what people want from media right now.

I thought his move speaking at the RNC was utterly stupid at the time, but it likely didn’t change the results of the election. If he is setting himself up to run for POTUS (which he plays coy about in the episode above), he’s made some smart moves IMO.

This is the asshole who shopped around for the highest bidder for his Teamsters' endorsement, despite the fact that Kamala Harris has stood shoulder to shoulder on the picket line with union members while Donald Trump stood in front of a crowd of fake union worker plants and explicitly stated he is anti-union over and over again. So, because Kamala refused to do the song and dance in front of him and bend the knee, he decided to withhold endorsement despite the fact that the majority of the local Teamster chapters in the country endorsed her afterwards.

Seriously, fuck this guy and his podcast.

Although, on second thought I think I will tune into his podcast on a singular day: The day Donald Trump and Elon Musk dismantle the Department of Labor. Yes, I'm going to tune in that day. I'm going to get great joy out of witnessing his self-induced meltdown.

Your recollection of events is inaccurate and your take unoriginal. Maybe listening to someone that has a different opinion than you would do some good?

Hmmm.

Teamsters president Sean O’Brien raged in a podcast interview that Democrats “f–ked us over for the last 40 years” — after a poll showed rank-and-file union members planned to overwhelmingly back Republican Donald Trump in the Nov. 5 election.

He literally said in the same quote: “I’m a Democrat.” If we can’t handle criticism from labor leaders within our own party, what are we doing? Do we want to win elections?

Unions have been dying for 40 years. I'd be upset with both parties. Biden was the most pro union president in decades but it wasn't enough. Unions are still losing.

Is O'Brien from Dearborn?

What do you want us to do with that "criticism?" If it wasn't for Democrats, there would be no unions at all. Fact. The Pubs would have repealed the Wagner Act a long time ago. Dems in Michigan repealed the right-to-work laws that had actually screwed unions for decades. It was a Pub law. Who did the Teamsters' national endorse in any races in Michigan? Oh.

This is the fallout from ideas like "neoliberalism." This is what happens. To the leftists who peddle these nonsense and dangerous ideas, I say FAFO. You got what you wanted: Dem scalps. Have fun under Trump, assholes. I've been fighting the good fight for 30+ years and I'm tired of being told that I'm no different from Pubs.

What was inaccurate?

Has Kamala Harris not been pro-union her entire career? Did she not stand a picket line in 2019?

Has Donald Trump not shown a disdain for unions his entire career? Has he been prohibitively anti-union and anti-worker?

Did this guy not demand a sales pitch from Harris and Trump for his endorsement? Did he feel slighted when Kamala told him she shouldn't have to beg for his endorsement after everything she's done for workers over the years and everything she planned to do if elected?

Did most of the local chapters of teamsters go against O'Brien's claim that his union was too divided by immediately endorsing her after his snub?

If his union really was too divided to be able to endorse, he shouldn't be blaming Democrats, particularly when Democrats are the ones right there on the picket line supporting his people, he should be blaming himself for being such a weak, ineffectual leader that he couldn't convince his people of the very obvious right choice here. I mean, for fuck's sake, one of the candidates is literally a billionaire CEO with a history of treating his workers/contractors like shit and explicit anti-union rhetoric. Gimme a fucking break.

Oh, and LMFAO at this douchebag even considering running for POTUS.

You’re going to have to get over your fixation on the word neoliberal. Just because some dumb leftist said you’re no different than a Republican doesn’t mean the word has no meaning. It is a well-documented and researched ideology that has pervaded segments of both parties since the Carter administration. This isn’t a concept just advanced by leftists.

My take is a lot more nuanced than O’Brien’s, but he is channeling the general anger of working class people towards the politics of the Democratic Party.

Why did a Democrat sign NAFTA into law? Why didn’t we pass card check under the Obama administration? Why did Obama negotiate the TPP? Why didn’t O’Brien get invited to speak at the DNC? Why did Harris not walk a Teamsters picket line during the campaign when she was asked to?

Democrats rightly need to be held to a higher standard on labor issues than Republicans. No one expects the Republicans to do the right thing on labor, so they get extra credit even when they’re just paying lip service. That’s just the truth, especially for Teamsters since they seem to lean conservative on cultural issues.

This is part and parcel of the identity politics conversation. Democrats thought they could treat unions as just another identity group within their coalition rather than treating them as central to their entire political program. Now they (and liberal parties around the world) are reaping the consequences of this hollowing out.

That's why I started with "Hmmm". I'm not sure which way to go with the above post.

I can't wait until the Department of Labor is crushed under the boot of two billionaire oligarchs that Sean O'Brien couldn't endorse against. It's going to be sweet, sweet FAFO-level comeuppance!

I hope he chokes on his tears and anger.

Look what you made me do! should be the new teamsters slogan. That would look great on the rear bumpers of a bunch of trucks parked outside the unemployment office.

So, because no one expects anything from republicans, they get a pass, while democrats are held to a higher standard?

The idea of voting for trump from any leader of a labor group is just puzzling. trump doesn't care about them, he fucked them every chance he had his entire life. So, maybe this does go on the FAFO thread. If one votes against their own interest because they hold one party to a higher standard just doesn't make sense.
