Stabbing at Winston Salem High School

Awful. I had a college friend who went to high school at West Forsyth and got stabbed at a high school party back in the early-‘90s.

I feel as if I can speak on this, as someone who lives three blocks from the school, as well as a graduate. And as someone who saw a blurred version of the video that's spreading virally.

1. This was a planned fight. Clearly. That's not surprising to me at all, knowing the area.
2. The only thing not planned was the kid who was getting attacked pulling out the weapon.
3. The thing that disturbs more more than anything was the way the kids acted at the end. How they all shuffled away like nothing had happened. THAT disturbs me more than anything else. That's a full blown disconnect from the violence they literally witnessed in front of their own eyes. Maybe it was shock? But I don't think it was. I think it was just the fact that they thought they could walk away after seeing what happened like nothing abnormal just occurred. That scares me more than the fight itself.

It's been going on for a long time, but I do think social media and the proliferation of violent videos of fights at schools or other places is desensitizing people to real-life crime, even if it happens in front of them. No doubt some kids were deeply affected and shocked by all of this, but growing numbers just shrug and walk away. Which also explains the growing self-absorption we see in so much of society, and the lack of compassion or empathy in our current politics.

I managed the Revco/CVS on the corner of Murray Road and Shattalon in the mid-late 90's. I bet you knew some of my employees who were NFHS students.

What a terrible situation. Reminiscent of the Tabor shooting a few years back. From another angle, WSFCS is already facing a budget crisis, partially due to dwindling enrollment and reduced payments from the state. This will likely amplify budget issues as more parents homeschool or look at Charter or Private schools (another Charter school in Clemmons was recently announced). Seems like this could lead to a death spiral for the school district. I would imagine other metros will follow. The State needs to figure something out.

The "State" (GOP state legislature dominated by people like Phil Berger) have figured it out - they hate public ed and want to do as much as possible to destroy it and privatize it. This is all a part of their plan - keep cutting resources, keep diverting public school funds to vouchers and charters and private schools, use a ridiculous rating system that makes schools look like testing failures when sometimes they're not, don't give adequate raises especially to veteran teachers to drive them out of the system, and then sit back and watch as public ed gradually declines and they can justify cutting even more from the system. It's working just as they wanted. WSFCS no doubt screwed the pooch with their budget crisis and that was their doing, but it still plays right into the NC GOP's plans to dismantle public ed in the state. The state legislature doesn't want to help improve public ed. They want it to get worse.

So weird
For likely 50 years the way to get elected in NC was to push for improved Public education
