Stranger Things season 5 [now including SPOILERS]

The only thing I would have liked to have seen answered is what happened with the army folks and how they cleared all that up without the gang getting arrested.
It's not made explicit, but I'm guessing it went something like this...

One El is no longer available to be captured (either by death or by escaping), then there's not much left for the military to do with the 12 elementary kids or the rest of the folks escaping the Upside Down other than release them. They can certainly take them into custody and interview/interrogate them, but unless they want to imprison over a dozen folks for an undefined amount of time for events that are top secret and can't be admitted to the public (including folks who are locally well-known) without any kind of cover story (like a natural disaster) and who would have others actively looking for them, then they pretty much have to release them.

So my guess is that Kay's team did indeed take them all into custody to interview/interrogate them and, once they were convinced that none of them could/would provide any information about El's whereabouts beyond what we saw happen, they simply released them and Kay's team moved on to other places and/or other concerns. Without El, the situation in Hawkins is fairly well resolved as the gate(s) to the Upside Down is (are) closed and there's not much else to be done there. At that point, the military would likely do a bit of clean up and then move on to other concerns (or similar concerns in other places). If you attempt to arrest and charge any of the folks involved, you'd have to have a trial and no one from the military wants to have to publicly (or even privately) explain what happened in Hawkins to anyone they don't have to. For the military, given how much they were outwitted and outmanuevered by the Hawkins folks, the easiest thing for them is to clean up what they can and move on while threatening anyone with info that the government will come for them if they reveal anything publicly.

Yeah, guess that makes sense. I think the ending alluded to the military making a deal with everyone involved to not talk about what really happened and they would let them go.

A similar deal was definitely talked about at the end of season 1 and during season 2

WPTF's building is in the video for "Slackjawed" by the Connells as well. I think it's another Norwood Cheek direct video like Hell, but I'm not 100% sure.

So, now that I've watched the finale and had time to both think about it and read others' thoughts, I'm curious...

What do y'all think happened to El (died or escaped)? And Why?
