Any list that puts Rakim below the top 5 is sort of silly. Most of the guys ahead of him were copying him.
A lot of guys “copied” Dr J, but he’s rarely (never?) considered a top 5 pro basketball player.

I love Rakim, but I wouldn’t have him in my top 5.

Fair point. I should shut up because I've been bored with hip hop since the Obama administration. One underrated aspect about Rakim, though, is his lyrical content. First best lyrical content for hip-hop: Public Enemy/GSH style activism and authority questioning. Second-best lyrical content: I'm the best rapper. Way down the list: money cash hoes, so to speak.

His track, "The Punisher" is a hilarious dig at gangsta. Full of really violent imagery, but ultimately it's just about Rakim being the greatest.

Prince’s halftime show remains the GOAT. And it’s still not close. I didn’t watch the Super Bowl this year but I’m years past I always just put on a replay of Prince during whatever halftime show is actually going on.

I'm not a big believer in "originators" automatically being in/toward the top. Ford made the first car, but I'd argue that many manufacturers make better cars than Ford.

I can see an argument for not top 5 (but probably your favorite rapper's favorite rapper), but behind some in that list is criminal. Just a bad list, on many fronts, imo.

Thing is, Rakim is a better rapper than most who came after him and better than just about any of the contemporary popular rappers by a long shot.

Now, the very early rappers who were getting their music published prior to 1985; they may have been some of the originators, but their stuff generally doesn’t hold up and they weren’t all that good compared to what came later.

1) What’s MF DOOM got to do with this?

2) Most rap GOAT lists are pretty bad. But also often hilarious.

Nicki Minaj before Kanye?

I would have Jay-Z and Eminem 1a and 1b depending on the day.

I wouldn't put Snoop in the top 20.
reasonable. i like kanye the producer more than kanye the rapper. the last time his rapping was consistently good was MBDTF.

Really regret skimming through the last x amount of pages

I think other than Tyler, Kendrick is the best live rap performer and PG Lang has the best art/creative direction of any rap artist. Not sure last night was anything ground breaking but it was generally enjoyable if you're a fan of hip-hop

The vocals were low on the main broadcast as they always seem to be. I definitely was not expecting him to NOT play most of his biggest records. Starting with an unleased snippet and mostly records that came out a few months ago was a bold decision

True, though I do love some Pearl Jam.

There's always music that isn't super easy to understand. That's why I like to read the lyrics.

I recall listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit when I was younger and singing. My uncle seemed genuinely surprised and asked, "do you understand that?"
