Tar Heel All-Time Basketball Superlatives

Good call on Steve Previs. Always liked him as a player. Had no idea how successful his post-UNC life had been. No way that his modest career at UNC paved the way for later highly successful life, other than Dean Smith instilling the "Carolina work ethic" into him.
Possibly on the work ethic. I expect Steve Previs had that down pat when he enrolled at UNC.

A phone call from Dean Smith asking someone to talk to a young Tar Heel letterman and starter wouldn’t hurt.

Rusty Clark’s last season at UNC was 1969.

Lefty’s last season at Davidson his team went 27-3 and lost in the East Regional Finals to UNC. He had lost in the 1968 Regional Finals to UNC.

In 1970, Lefty was at Maryland. He went 13-13.
Maybe the "seven footer" comment was when he was at Davidson.

Most musical

Of course Rasheed and Company singing “Jingle Bells” comes to mind but didn’t Quintin Thomas try out a recording career?

Quentin is an assistant coach at UT -San Antonio. Before that he was an assistant for Gary’s “The Glove” Payton at College of Alameda.

He did say something towards the end of his UNC career about trying for a career in music. Rap, IIRC.

Closest call coming out of high school to going to state college.

I’ve read it said: Phil Ford
I’ve also heard Phil say that for most coaches during their visits Mrs. Ford put out milk and cookies. For Coach Smith’s visit she put out the whole Sunday after church dinner spread with all the fixings. Phil knew where his Mom wanted him to go.

And, she warned Phil that if all those coaches (Stormin’ Norman and Lefty come to mind) were promising Phil a starting position as a freshman, they’d do the same thing with different players in later years.

On hippest and/or hippiest, who has media guides going back to the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s?

Some of those photos might show some players sporting telling clothing and accessories.

Donn Johnston looking pretty ‘hip’ (hippy?) in those slacks. Karl stepping out in Adidas before they were everywhere.

Any idea who the young woman is to Donn Johnston’s left?

Donn dated a young woman named Becky Fuller, who was a cheerleader. She was “adopted” by a Chapel Hill family I knew well, Ken and Karin Howard. They had kids and two of them were about the ages of the boy and girl in the photo.

I always thought that Marcus Ginyard was most likely to be elected to office, but given current world i would doubt he would ever want to dip into that cesspool of politics

Highest Threshold of Pain might go to Derrick Phelps. Guy pretty badly bruised his tailbone in the 93 ACC tourney and had some other minor injuries and still helped lead UNC to the 93 national title, despite hurting the whole time through the NCAA tournament. I'm sure there's plenty of other UNC warriors out there, but he's one that I thought of right away.
