Ronald Reagan:

"Imposing such tariffs or trade barriers and restrictions of any kind are steps that I am loath to take. And in a moment I'll mention the sound economic reasons for this: that over the long run such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer."

Reagan says some companies had been "engaging in unfair trade practices" and going against an agreement with the US - and that this was therefore a "special case".

This sets the tone for the rest of the address, which he dedicates to making clear his commitment to free trade and the dangers of high tariffs.

… … “At first … it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works. But only for a short time.”

"What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars."

… "High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars.
The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition.

"So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs."

Reagan praises the economic benefits of free trade and continues: "Now, that message of free trade is one I conveyed to Canada's leaders a few weeks ago, and it was warmly received there. Indeed, throughout the world there's a growing realisation that the way to prosperity for all nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and promoting fair and free competition."

He then talks about the "sound historical reasons" for this realisation: "For those of us who lived through the Great Depression, the memory of the suffering it caused is deep and searing."

[he explains imposing a targeted tariffs on Japanese semiconductors notwithstanding all that]

"America's jobs and growth are at stake."

I'm not sure I understand the issue here. MAGA HATES Reagan. Some hate him explicitly. They all hate him as a matter of principle. Why would Trump be trying to cuddle up to him now?

I don't follow MLB, but I'm pretty sure the World Series opens in Canada tonight.

It would be funny if Americans coming to the game are turned away before entering ball park 😄

Nothing to do with MAGA. Trump is genuinely nervous about the tariffs case before the SCOTUS. That hearing is November 5 and I think he is mainly trying to influence SCOTUS, which houses a lot of Reaganites among its conservative majority.

Maybe, but if so, this is completely counterproductive. Those justices are 1,000x more likely to know about that ad (and Reagan's comments) now than before Trump said something about it.

CAN YOU IMAGINE, DAN?????

"US President Donald Trump has endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, expressing confidence that he will perform ‘even better’ in the 2026 parliamentary election than he did in 2022, when Trump also backed him."

"When President Donald Trump endorsed Boris Johnson for prime minister of the United Kingdom over the weekend, it wasn't the first time he'd thrust himself into another nation's domestic political affairs.

"Earlier this year, Trump rushed to recognize Israel's claim to the Golan Heights region as part of an apparent campaign to support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's re-election effort."

"U.S. President Donald Trump said at the White House on Tuesday he would endorse Argentinian President Javier Milei for re-election."

If Trump wants to pour money into Canadian media, I am sure they will take his cash. both sides of the political aisle here see him as a clown. Well maybe not the Danielle Smith Albertans, but they drive around in a clown car themselves so...

See, you are assuming he is acting based on some sort of logic, when what we are seeing is pure, unchecked id.
Trump IS the American Id come to life. If some of our presidents have embodied some of the best or greatest traits of the American spirit (say, FDR) then Trump within himself manifests many or most of our uglier and darkest national traits.

Scavino...that fuckin' guy 🤨

The Trump right is insane and lives in a different reality.
And not only are they insane, but they are also some of the most thin-skinned and insecure little dumbasses around. They all love to preen and act tough and macho (see Pete Hegseth), and they love to humiliate and trash-talk their opponents, but let the other side criticize them in almost any way and they lose it and melt down and cry and whine like the spoiled babies they are. Hence Dear Leader's reaction to Canada airing some mostly accurate ads from Reagan regarding tariffs.
