Bessent is worth about $500 million. He rents out land to farmers for about $1 million/year in income. That is not the same as being a farmer. He has actually been delaying his ethical obligation to divest his interests in that North Dakota farmland since he was appointed.

Anyway, in his answer he implies there is an actual deal with China but it won’t be announced until Xi and Trump meet.

This dude is a madman.
I do think that these overseas trips where he is feted by kings and sheikhs and emperors get him as jacked up as a drug kingpin on a mountain of coke. He definitely gets the full King of the World emotional lift on these trips and it amps up his already considerable powers of self-aggrandizement. He is the most powerful person in the world at the moment, don’t takes some doing to overstate his importance, but he is quite good at doing so and demanding that everyone around him feed his out of control ego.

Of course, that makes him a security liability due to his susceptibility to flattery and bribery, but it’s his government right now and America is just along for the ride.

Inflation is not as accelerated as many predicted at this stage but the direction of inflation has clearly reversed course after a cooling trend in 2024 coming off of 21st century highs post-COVID … retail has certainly seen a trend reversal.

U.S. Gives Mexico More Time to Meet Demands to Avoid Tariffs

Taxes on goods from Mexico had been set to go into effect at the end of the week.

“… In July, Mr. Trump threatened to put 30 percent tariffs on all goods from Mexico, but then gave the country a 90-day reprieve so it could negotiate with the United States.

That reprieve was set to expire on Saturday.

When the two presidents spoke Saturday, Ms. Sheinbaum said, they agreed to give Mexico more time to address U.S. demands to lower what it called nontariff barriers to trade.

The White House is asking Mexico to remove what it calls 54 barriers to trade that aren’t tariffs, such as disputes about intellectual property. Ms. Sheinbaum said Monday in her daily news conference that she and Mr. Trump agreed to give it “a few more weeks” to finalize that pending issue….”

This is where Trump talking this up for over a week was a fail in the expectations game. He (and Bessent) made it sound like a number of key issues had been resolved but details were being held back for the two leaders to announce.
