Tariff Gambit Bets Americans Will Swallow Higher Prices

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent argues that the American dream is about more than cheap televisions, but inflation-weary consumers might disagree.

“… Mr. Trump and his advisers are betting that they can sell an inflation-weary public on a provocative idea: Cheap stuff is not the American dream.

… The notion that there is more to life than low-cost imports is an acknowledgment that tariffs could impose additional costs on Americans. It is also a pitch that the burden will be worth it. Mr. Trump’s ability to convince consumers that it is acceptable to pay more to support domestic manufacturing and adhere to his “America First” agenda could determine whether the president’s second term is a success or a calamity. …”

If that was the American dream was about Walmart wouldn't have abandoned it's "Made in the USA" ad campaign in the 1990s and filled their aisles with cheap shit from China. The American dream is unbridled consumerism fed by the cocaine high of capitalists; if it wasn't the jobs would have never left in the first place.

I rushed to buy a slightly used (under 20K miles) Toyota RAV4 prime from CarMax last week before tariffs hit. Price was under $40K. A new one is/was upper $40s to low 50s BEFORE tariffs. That car will be over $60K and slightly used one’s upper 40s-50K soon. It’s insanity!

Honestly, he is throwing away a chance at a booming start to his term with this tariff whiplash — the market was primed to embrace presumed pro-growth policies but instead he is using up a ton of good will and economic potential on magical thinking about tariffs, opening a worldwide trade war and erratic economic and foreign policy.
He's a stable genius...

Just one that doesn't understand economics, or science, or business, or...

Fuck it's probably easier to talk about what he understands, that would be being born on third base.
