Trump Delayed Reciprocal Tariffs After Bessent Wanted More Time on Deals

President also decided to send out letters as a way to keep the pressure up

ā€œā€¦ The weekend before his Monday announcement, Trump deliberated in phone calls and private conversations with allies from his private golf club in Bedminster, N.J., according to people familiar with the outreach. Trump was weighing whether he should give a new August deadline or send out letters without a date and simply a declaration of new tariff rates, the people said.

…
In his phone calls, Trump told aides and allies he was frustrated with the lack of progress being made with countries, blaming those nations for not coming to the table with offers that, in his view, were good enough for the U.S., said some of the people familiar with Trump’s outreach. Trump argued privately he was riding a wave of momentum from his signing of the ā€œOne Big Beautiful Billā€ and his bombing of Iran, and wanted to ride those perceived wins to victories on trade policy, these people noted.

In the end, Trump decided to send out the letters along with the delay as a negotiating tactic to eke out last-minute concessions from trading partners, people familiar with the matter said.

On Tuesday he said more letters are expected, adding that he was about two days from sending a letter to the European Union. U.S. and EU officials are still in close contact. ā€¦ā€

The art of the deal. What a buffoon.

I also look forward to every scrap of copper being ripped out of countless rural buildings the second someone is not watching.

this story won't be a one off perhaps.

Just hope that the power is off. I read a story about a guy stealing copper wire from a building with the power on. They found him on the roof, dead.

That is a cool example but doesn’t have anything to do with the issue discussed. Toilet paper shortages were often drive by hoarding. China shut off the shipments of crucial materials out of its country.
It's been shown it was not due to hoarding but the fact there are different toilet papers for commercial versus home use and it took time to ramp up production of the latter when people no longer were pooping in airports, office buildings etc.

And anyone with females in their home knows toilet paper consumption isn’t limited to pooping habits.

My best friend since high school is a gay man who has been in a committed relationship for almost 50 years. After all these years, they inevitably run out of toilet paper when they have female house guests (or even just a social gathering at their place with multiple women in attendance.) Even though they attempt to plan, their ability to understand the consumption rate of toilet paper by women just seems to baffle them.

Install a bidet. My butt is much cleaner and toilet paper last 10 times longer. I hate taking a poop in a public location without a bidet now. They are wonderful.

Fair enough but it wasn’t because a country decided they no longer wanted to ship to another.
