A movement that nobody is paying attention to in the US is that Europe and Canada have been quietly developing software to avoid American dependance in that department as well. The rest of the world is quickly adjusting to the fact that American hegemony is too dangerous of a thing when you have a population so willing to hand the reins over to a Trump.

I am wholly confident he is on the wrong side of this issue but I would love to know the context behind this as someone who has absolutely no idea about aircraft certification and what not.
Well, for one thing he said they would be tariffed and banned so that's sort of a bad start.

But the issue is that Canada started doing its own certification of airplanes after the Boeing Max disaster, in which it was revealed that US industry was basically being allowed to self-certify. Basically it doesn't trust the FAA any more. And it's taking a "whole plane" approach to safety, instead of the FAA's approach of "only evaluate changes since last model" rather than assess the new plane as a whole.

I have no idea if that is too inefficient or sound safety practices, but it's clearly within Canada's right to do so. The Bombardier ban would be illegal, not that it matters.

Anyway many Gulfstream products have been certified in Canada -- just not their latest ones.
