"... A day after endorsing Kamala Harris for president and urging her fans to vote regardless of whom they supported, Taylor Swift reiterated that call in her acceptance speech at the Video Music Awards last night. “The fact that this is a fan-voted award and you voted for this, I appreciate it so much,” she said. “And if you are over 18, please register to vote for something else that’s very important coming up — the 2024 presidential election.” ..."

And this was for the biggest award of the night, and were essentially the last words before the show rolled credits, to massive applause. For many GenZ voters, it’s analogous to the winner of Best Picture at the Oscars using final words to tell the audience to register to vote.

With her social media endorsement the night before, vote.org saw an increase of over 300K new visitors to the site as a result, as of the next morning.

At this point of this particular cycle, persuadables are a wild goose chase. But enthusiasm and mobilization, turnout, fundraising… these are the keys. Registration is a huge indicator, and mostly underrepresented in polling.

Anybody discounting Swift’s role either doesn’t understand pop culture, or the electoral landscape, or math, etc. And her role is not over, she’ll continue to be timely weighing in.

It does seem like the whole ball game is coming down to turnout. Polls can only model turnout to a limited extent. In 2020, the pool of eligible adult voters grew by 9 million, but the total number of votes increased by 22 million -- an almost unprecedented spike in voter turnout (perhaps facilitated by greater use of mail ballots during Covid).

None of the 2020 polls properly modeled that turnout spike. Now, it just so happened that the increased turnout was relatively close for both sides, so it did not materially impact the race (even though Trump had a huge enthusiasm lead in the polls). If Harris can somehow get the young white women to turnout at a 10% higher clip than 2020, it easily could sway the race to her -- much more so than any remaining "undecided" voter pool.

It did materially impact the race. It was A LOT closer than expected. And as a result, Pubs did better than expected down ballot.

I hate, hate, hate so much that our elections are structured this way. Turnout It's really a tired observation, but one that nonetheless cannot be made too often: any system where the "ground game" is so important is not an acceptable system for good governance (not to mention that the swing votes are the 100,000 or so lowest information voters in certain states). The country shouldn't have to rely on the better candidate ALSO having the ability to get their voters to actually vote.

It will be interesting to see how many of the 2020 voters continue to be voters in 2024 and forward. I think it will be a while before we see 158m votes cast again.

In addition to the increase in mail ballot use, I think that the pandemic and the corresponding limitation of social opportunities may have resulted in more people paying attention to the election because there was nothing else to do (included within that is people paying attention from conspiracy theories around Covid/vaccines which may have just been a byproduct of having nothing else to do).

I'd be willing to set the over/under on this year's vote total at 158 million. And I'd take the over.

that idiot thinks it's some sort of sweet brag/own but its pretty sad if true.

not because taylor swift is so amazing but because if his kids don't know about someone as popular and ubiquitous as she is, then there is definitely an absolute treasure trove of fun, cool, normal kid stuff that they're also missing out on.

Yeah, I don’t think the fact that you’ve sheltered your kids from having any knowledge of the existence of one of the most famous people in the history of the world— regardless of whether you like her— is anything to brag about.

Right. Whether their weirdo dad is aware or not, there's a decent chance they actually do know who she is depending on their age but pops is definitely entrapping them in an insular environment. Look at his sXitter account and you'll see he's a right wing loon pastor.

When that dude's daughters finally figure out that Taylor Swift exists, they're going to be so mad at him they'll start screwing random guys just out of a sense of rage and betrayal.

I don't start shit, but I can tell you how it ends
Don't get sad, get even
So on the weekends
I don't dress for friends
Lately I've been dressing for revenge
