Teacher Rally in Raleigh Today

Many school systems are cutting back on teachers and personnel because they are in a budget crunch because of the state legislature's failure to pass a budget and because the money they get from the state is insufficient to meet their needs and being increasingly diverted to vouchers and charters.
All while the legislature is scheming how to keep counties from raising the money to pay for schools on their own, with Berger’s bill to freeze real estate revaluation for tax appraisal purposes, pushing a constitutional amendment to cap the total revenues local governments can collect in property tax, and requiring state approval for localities to raise sales taxes. Their intent to totally control the finances of the counties is clear. They are simply not going to allow blue counties to raise the revenue to support their own needs.

Make that 35 kids/per classroom and do the math. We could only dream of 20/class. A teachers dream
Ain't that the truth. My spouse teaches 5th grade in Wake County and hasn't had fewer than 26 any year in the last 15. He also never gets a planning period and almost always has to eat lunch with the kids as well. Basically, from the moment he walks in that door in the morning until the last bus leaves, he is with kids. Even to step out and use the restroom he has to get another teacher to watch her class and his.

Yeah, all these idiots who think that teaching is easy and just glorified babysitting and that they don't deserve more pay because they "get summers off" desperately need to go and try to do what modern teachers do for about a week or two. They'd never say that again.

The decks have been and continue to be stacked against teachers and public schools.

Way too much is asked of both.

A teacher friend of mine posted this on Facebook - I pretty much agree with all of it

It doesn't get better than that, a powerful retort.

" 4. “Public schools are failing.”

Public schools are “failing” the same way your truck is “failing” after your cousin on meth steals the catalytic converter, sells the tires, pawns the battery, and then tells everybody at Thanksgiving you bought a piece of shit. "

LOL Good Stuff.

Wake County-very close to the top of Local supplements pay plan
You get to $60,000 in year 12
You never go above $70,349
In "regular " job terms 60,000 is $28.85 an hour for a 12 year teacher
I promise you there are number of jobs in Wake-likely close to the norm-where you have a college degree, get on the job training and make $60,00 in 3-4 years
BTW-the Cadillac State Health Plan- a well baby delivery for that employee is at least $5,000 out of pocket
