He was, he said, just creating a new Republican “brand.” After Rove executed Dowd’s carefully calculated targeting to produce Bush’s narrow victory in 2004, Dowd was triumphant. “Issues don’t matter in presidential campaigns,” he exulted in 2005, “it’s your brand values that matter.” For Dowd, facts didn’t matter either, only “brand” identity.

Contaminating his rival’s brand was as vital as enhancing his own. Dowd had been central in formulating the 2002 midterm campaign that zeroed in on the Democrats’ patriotism. In 2004, he and Rove crafted the negative attack on Kerry as a “flip-flopper.” Asked about the TV ads ripping Kerry, Dowd said on Sept. 22, 2004, on CNN, “I think it’s totally tasteful. And the American public is going to be fine with it.” He also blithely defended the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth defamation of Kerry’s sterling Vietnam War record. “I think the Swift boat ads were part of that dialogue,” he said in a 2005 PBS “Frontline” documentary, “but it was more important in that they pointed out something about John Kerry, which is, all this guy’s talking about is his Vietnam record. What does that have to do with the war on terror?”…”

Especially the "wrapped in towel" part. I could see using the woods as a momentary stop during your sprint away to wipe my away prints, and ditch it print-less knowing it would be found eventually. But why not stuff the towel back in your backpack and cover the gun with sticks and leaves instead of a towel? He had an escape route, it seems this was probably intentional.

Also shooter could've kept the rifle with him til the woods (with several more bullets loaded) for defense against potential coppers.

That is why I am skeptical that the rifle in the woods is the murder weapon. It could be. It also could be someone else’s gun. They like guns in Utah. On the other hand, I can’t imagine there are too many guns lying around in the woods in Utah.

Michael Mallinson, 77, had no idea what was happening until he got a panicked phone call around 6 p.m., while he was taking a nap. It was his daughter, instructing him to delete his social media because his name and photo were being spread online by an account claiming he was the suspect in the shooting.

The problem: Mallinson says he's never set foot in Utah.

"This was all shock and horror, first of all, that there'd been a shooting, but second of all that I was in any way named or implicated in it," said Mallinson.
