The Charlie Kirk Thread

I find it incredibly amusing that you make these grand sweeping statements that are nearly always wrong. It is untrue that everyone on one "side" or another fails to acknowledge the wider problem.

No opinion will ever be "everyone".
You would think your nearly day long quest to associate the killer with Antifa based on your misinterpretation of arrows would have you sitting this one out.
Really? Why? Being wrong about the alignment of Kirk's killer means I shouldn't comment on the rhetoric issues of today's primary political parties?

No, it means you should have some level of self awareness at some point that your grand pronouncements are often piles of horseshit stacked higher than you likely stand.

I was thinking yesterday about whether Charlie Kirk's death would remain an enduring story. Now that it appears the murderer was just another MAGA gun nut, I think not. Sure, the hardcore types will continue to bray about Kirk the same way they do with Ashli Babbitt. But, I think the crossover into anyone living in the real world will be brief.

Many people, when notified of the death of Charlie Kirk, responded, "who?" That may very well be the default response in a couple of months.

I don't know what "grand pronouncement" I made. Saying that both sides believe that the other side is the only one responsible for our current political violence isn't a grand pronouncement.

Saying that news outlets, even those who may want to be balanced, have to pander to one side or the other, and therefore end up becoming part of the problem, also isn't a grand pronouncement.

So, when you talk about some "grand pronouncement"...

I'll also add....

If you have such an issue with "grand pronouncements", that you feel it necessary to completely avoid the topic of what I said, in favor of calling me out for the grand pronouncement, then I'd absolute to hear your thoughts on this:

Retraction of a widely reported claim

So, what do YeahRamCalla hang onto next? Ah, yes! some rando on TikTok, with 3 followers and as likely to be a plant, screeching some insanity.

The overwhelming bulk of IRL liberals condemn political violence, convey condolences to the survivors, and shake their heads in sorrow for the country. The overwhelming bulk of public right wing figures IMMEDIATELY leverage a gruesome murder as a justification for violence and retribution - and continue to do so despite the killer shown to be a FAR right-wing figure.

ETA on 9/15: the killer appears to have been involved in far right-wing-shitpost-gaming-meme culture that, from my readings, is more aligned with nihilistic, rhetorically violent libertarian/anarchist leans. There some weird bedfellows in this world, including bosiding and nihilistic trans, furry (this community has a neo Nazi issue), and gay posters (presuming the posters are honest about who they are), who blame the left for making them into a caricature and wedge issue.

And you wonder why we think maga is dragging this country, against the will of the majority, into widespread political violence … and then you bleat and shriek about being called fascist.

MAGA gave away the game 2 days ago. They are champing at the bit for a “war” with the enemy left. I don’t know how it’s going to to play out, but they want violence.

How do we move forward knowing this? I don’t think, “I’m just going to go to work, take care of my family, and hope this works out” is realistic anymore.
I am not a gun person but I am considering buying something (probably a bolt action rifle) with as good of a lock as I can get and store it in the attic. If I do I will take lessons.

The purpose would not be for a random break in. Having it accessible enough for that would be too risky especially with my special needs child.

My hope/expectation would be that the rifle is never used except for training.

Most recent events where the shooters were politically motivated have resulted in the discovery of a digital footprint… manifesto/twitter/Reddit within hours. Given that we’re a day or so into knowing who this guy is and there’s nothing directly attributable to him that belies his motivations or beliefs… I think it’s more likely he didn’t follow any sort of cohesive ideology.

Seemed to be a relatively bright guy who ended up feeling like he had no prospects in life and leaned into the pervasive culture of irony and nihilism that’s present in many corners of the internet populated by young men. Eventually came to the conclusion that, fuck it, he might as well take a pot shot at the most convenient high profile figure he found. Pretty similar to Thomas Crooks, but he actually made the shot. Both had access to guns from family which made the act even easier. No easy answer to the cause or cure of such circumstances.
