How did we get here? What made 77 million Americans fall for the grift of an orange pos idiot like Donald Trump? I just don’t understand it.

Many will tell you Democrats made them do it [not endorsing that belief, just something I am starting to see more frequently on social media, versions of it’s not my fault, Dem’s made me do it because [wokeness] [woman] [Gaza] [inflation] [Biden] [Harris] [immigration] [girls sports] [embracing neocons] [student loans] [insert issue].

Outside of MAGA, MAHA, the Manosphere and Musketeers, who mostly remain thrilled by almost every new instance of lib-owning destruction of the government, people are not ready to take responsibility for their vote (or staying home).

i take full responsibility for my non vote. i wouldnt sacrifice my character for either of the two corrupt partys. wash dc is about nothing more than greed no matter which party is in charge.

i know quite a few magas and they hate gays and minorities more than anything....therefore they hate you libs. one hate conditioned by their religion and the other conditioned by their parents. they couldnt care less about the price of of eggs because everyone of them are making more money than they have ever made.....but a great issue to hid their homophobia and racism behind.

now if they ever started making less money or start losing a portion of their wealth their hate will change order. would dems risk some of their wealth to change the order is a great question.

In all seriousness how do you see not voting changing anything?

I can see how some people are so stupid or self absorbed or lazy that they aren't informed and don't care so that they don't vote. They probably shouldn't. Bad cess to them and they are welcome to the crumbs from the table if there are any. Those who crow about it and pretend that they are above voting for anyone is just polishing a turd.

Because Trump is way more effective as a candidate than a president

It's easy to drum up the energy when you are against things... When running.

It's harder to advocate what you are doing once that power is obtained because you don't have someone you are against

He's trying to still have boogeymen but he's struggling because everyone knows he's got full power in government. So he's gotta own it and that's a bitch

Basically, the internet, celebrity worship, religion, greed, and racism.

The internet - every bias has it's own network now. And social media, especially, let the crazy spread like wildfire.

Celebrity worship - tabloids, movie stars, The Apprentice. For as much as they "hate" the Hollywood elites, MAGA sure cares about what they're doing all the damn time.

Religion/tribalism - respectfully, religious faith requires a propensity for belief in nonsensical things. This propensity can extend to things beyond religion, too. And it's all tied with tribalism. Can throw in Americans' obsession with team sports, as well. Rooting for your "team", displaying their colors, etc.

Greed - profiteers prioritizing money above all else - Murdoch, Musk, Trump, Zuck, Bezos. Citizens United. Trashing the environment, poisoning the national consciousness, producing and promoting propaganda because it sells, lobbying to shift all the tax burden on the middle and lower classes.

Racism/prejudice - need I say more?

The answer is simple—one word, even: Misinformation.

We find a way to control the spread of lies, alternative facts and misinformation—and replace it with the truth—we start to get our country back on track.

We have two problems, however.

One, the spread of misinformation via a completely unchecked social media sphere, is exacerbating the situation so much so that there’s no current way to fight it.

Two, we have a First Amendment that currently protects this spread of misinformation under the umbrella of “free speech.” I highly doubt that our forefathers had the current info-wars landscape in mind when they penned the Constitution.

Until we find a way to solve these two problems, things will only continue to worsen.

But you asked about how we got here, and, IMHO, this is exactly how we got here.

All it takes is one push into the right wing echo chamber, and it's impossible to get out of. Agree with one teency weency thing they believe, and good luck getting out. It sucks you in, and eventually, you believe all of it.

I’d say that, more than anything, it’s the relentless propaganda.

I remember hearing Rush Limbaugh in the early 90s and thinking….wow, he smears people, makes wild claims, pushes misleading ideas, is nonetheless (sometimes) funny and charming — for HOURS everyday. What’s the end for this?

Well, after the growth of the right-wing propaganda industry — more and more Limbaugh-style radio hosts and Fox News and all the internet garbage — I guess here we are.

I had a person my life for decades that was very smart , very successful-he taught in the Med School and the english Dept-so yea well rounded . For deacdes He was pretty apolitical in the party politics sense. Somewhere around 60 he started watching Fox news etc....And he spent his last couple decades wrapped increasingly in that bullshit....I understood the "taxes" part-he was making real nice money by then....But I never understood the rest

Standards? Seriously? Have you ever gone through a whole page without backing and filling?
