I’m looking at the forecasted snow in the Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia and I’m thinking, “I haven’t been to The Sods in a couple years. Looks like time for a trip.”

If you don’t know The Sods and you live in the Eastern United States, you should know them. It’s as if someone stuck Canada’s Niagara Escarpment south of the Mason-Dixon Line AND elevated it to 4,000 feet. Southernmost tundra-like landscape in North America. Red Spruce with no growth on the north and west sides of the trees because of the prevailing winds. Rime ice in the winter (which can be now through April 1st) that is reminiscent of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington in the dead of winter.

The Sods is also spectacular in Spring, Summer, and Fall. In the Summer, you can often escape the heat and humidity of the South.

I used to climb a lot at Seneca Rocks in West Virginia (greatly preferred Seneca to New River Gorge). At some point in the summer, it was just too hot and humid at Seneca to climb again; so, we’d go hiking at The Sods.
 
Still more than a week out, but snow has been showing on the models runs for the first week of December for a while now. I like where that's at because it usually ends up being more NW the closer we get.

Bold prediction. Unfortunately the NWS shows lots of rain with a low of 40 on turkey day, so I don't think so. But the cold behind that front is something to watch!
