Have friends visiting from Rhode Island. After dinner they got a text message from a colleague showing carnage around Providence from this storm. Looked like a microburst on their street. Trees down in a line, cars crushed, houses with holes in the roof etc. A microburst hit our neighborhood during Fran and you would have some properties untouched and then others where it looked like a giant walked on them. Our house (North Raleigh) had 30 trees down, seven alone on/ through the roof. Our next door neighbor had nothing but a few branches in the yard.

32 dead, including 14 kids, from flooding in Texas. A lot of girls that were at a summer camp are still missing, too.

Just horrific. According to CNN 27 girls from the camp that was devastated (Camp Mystic) are still missing, and while there is a massive search-and-rescue effort going on I would imagine that the odds are not good that any of the girls are still alive. Some were as young as 7. What a nightmarish story. :(

Just awful.

Shit! Poor kids.

Sadly, one of the victims at the camp was the 8-year-old daughter of former UNC footballer Patrick Marsh, who was a deepsnapper on the Bunting teams.

Is it known the little girl is dead?
Yep, unfortunately so. Patrick and his family live in Birmingham, where my wife and I just moved from, and his wife and my wife were in a women’s physicians group together. That’s how we found out this afternoon.

Damn, that is so heartbreaking. I cannot fathom the pain of losing a child. Truly cannot even remotely imagine it.

Just fuck.

Yikes! I was yelling, “Run! Run!” as I watched that.

Flooding like that is the craziest thing. It doesn’t seem possible. We have a small creek by our house and it’s amazing the amount flooding that can come from that during a heavy rain. A few weeks ago, it flooded a street near me that sits about 20-30 yards away from the creek:

Also took out the railings along the greenway trail right by our house (the water along that stretch rises very high over the trail during periods of heavy rain):

Considering how small that creek is, it’s scary to think of how much damage a big river can do.
