No fucking warning. 😡

They did have warning. There was a flood warning out from the NWS four hours beforehand. They just didn't pay attention. The camp should have had NOAA weather radios to alert them. There was even a dangerous flood warning out for the river an hour before the flood waters came through the camp, but they didn’t know because they were asleep and didn't have any warning system like a NOAA weather.

I completely understand that climate =/= weather. But any discussions of events like this (and I'm referring to both TX and the Triangle) that omits the intensification of storms that climatologists have been predicting for decades now as a result of climate change are missing the mark.

My son's friend had just moved to Camelot Village the end of June. Somehow putting nothing but roofs in the Blue Zone (flood plain/swamp) was according to the planning department the best way to get density near the major traffic corridor. Oops.

That really sucks. Hope he had renter's insurance.

NWS Raleigh confirmed 4 tornadoes:

1: Raleigh Executive Jetport, Sanford, Lee County, NC
2: 4085 to 4014 Moncure Pittsboro Rd., Chatham County, NC
3: 680 Heartpine Dr., Mebane, NC - Orange County, NC
4: Mount Hermon Rock Creek Rd., Snow Camp, NC - Alamance County, NC

The death toll is now at 95+, with at least 27 from Camp Mystic. Just unfathomable.
That state and local officials did nothing about Camp Mystic after the 1987 flood was bad enough, but if this summer camp is rebuilt and reopened it will be even more criminal and negligent if local, state, and federal officials do nothing to ensure that the camp is built on higher ground, away from and well above the floodplain. Sadly, I'm guessing that officials will continue to do nothing to prevent this camp or anyone else from building in the floodplain or dangerous areas.

Heard the guy from the national weather service say basically a line from Southern Pines to Roxboro saw the majority of the rain.

I'm surprised they could get insurance coverage for rebuilding in the same place.

Wow. That is significant.

This has happened to Camelot Village about every three years since I got to town in 1981. Supposedly it used to be worse but JP Goforth did a concrete ditch or something when he did the Oaks S/D.
ETA the lowest spot in Chapel Hill is the duck pond behind the Rainbow Soccer fields. There's a lift pump there to pump the poop to Finley.

Google AI says the 1932 flood only resulted in 7 deaths. Maybe the area wasn’t very populated.
